The number of asylum seekers in Cyprus is set to exceed 3.5 per cent of the population, Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides said on Tuesday, adding that migration was the leading example of the failure of a European policy.
If the current trend continues Cyprus will have 100,000 asylum seekers, refugees and economic migrants in just five years, Petrides said. “You understand what this means for a country like Cyprus,” he added.

Three locations near the Green Line have been pre-selected for the construction of the new (second) reception and accommodation centre for refugees arriving in Cyprus in search for a better tomorrow.
Cyprus has been facing increased migration flows in the past last three years, necessitating a new reception and accommodation centre, since the one in Kokkinotrimithia cannot accommodate any others. Additionally, cheap accommodation available for refugees and asylum seekers is hard to find nowadays, making the creation of new Centre a matter of urgency.
As the Interior Minister Constantinos Petridis told Phileleftheros newspaper, the second reception and accommodation centre will be able to host 500 – 1,000 people and will operate in the wider area of Nicosia in a location which will soon be selected.

Having more space for both refugees and economic migrants in another purpose built centre will be a good thing! It’s a pity we don’t hav a proper ferry to Greece because lots of these people would like to move on...

Once you register for asylum, you have to wait in that country until you are processed by the authorities, you just can't jump on a ferry to Greece.

The boat was carrying a large number of people including children, reports said.
A patrol boat from the ports’ authority went out to sea in the Pomos area and the boat was being towed to Latchi harbour.

Two Syrians will appear in court on Tuesday suspected of helping to smuggle 131 migrants to Cyprus who arrived on the island on a boat from Turkey.
Cyprus police said Monday they towed to shore 131 migrants, almost all from Syria, after they were sighted on an overcrowded boat off the island's northwest tip near Paphos.
The boat with 129 Syrians, one Lebanese and an Egyptian on board was located five nautical miles off the coast by a patrol vessel and tugged to Latchi harbour.
Police believe the boat set off from Turkey, a route used by people smugglers in the past.
According to the official Cyprus News Agency, those on board told police they had paid smugglers $2,000 each to bring them to the island.
Once they neared the island, the captain had abandoned the vessel on a speed boat.
Two Syrian men, aged 33 and 43, seen on a speed boat in the same waters as the migrant vessel were arrested for questioning, police said.
Investigators are also looking to question the Cypriot owner of the boat.

At the very least land on a mainland country rather than an island as onward travel is that much easier.
