Six years ago ,we signed a rental agreement for one year which cost us nothing.Since then our landlord has never mentioned renewing the agreement. Now his representative tells us that because of a new tax that the landlord has to pay,we need to sign a new rental agreement at a cost of 100 euros to us and the same to the landlord.Has anyone else had experience of this ?

Our landlord received a letter informing him that he would have to pay a certain percentage of the rental income on an annual basis and he had to submit our Rental Agreement to the local Municipality in order to calculate the amount. Our new rental agreement was drawn up directly between the landlord and us as he told us he wanted to avoid having to pay for an agent or solicitor to do it. As we did it all ourselves the responsibility of paying if we used an outsider was never discussed. Likewise we drew up our own inventory with photographs as the landlord has another property with an agent who charges a fee for this service. Our rental leases have always been for a fixed term.
However, when looking at some properties five years ago one agent told us that as well as having to put down one month's rental as a security deposit we would also have to pay half of the fee to draw up the rental lease. So I anticipate you will get a variety of responses as it seems to depend on the arrangement the landlord has with the agent.
