Bravo Hudswell. It takes a brave man to admit it. It is a mess.

Shame on the British Army for not promoting you to Sergeant Major after 39 years loyal service. I think Sargeant Major Hudswell has a nice ring to it. A certain cache.

But I digress ;)

To make my day, all I need now is to read Apus Apus, Kingfisher, Jackie and Jimgym admit that the whole thing is a mess. Plus the lesser-known of the species whose names pass me by

HIC Perhaps you need to do some research into the ranks and positions within the British Army, it may help you understand a little more about the Hudswell career.

Lloyd, take care that, with your eyes elevated in adoration to the twenty seven effulgent stars up in the heavens, you don’t fall down a yawning chasm!

And modesty.

I don’t think Lloyd has ever extolled the EU as being the be all and end all or not without faults. It’s the Alternative he has condemned. A UK on its own, outside the EU trading block and all that entails. In fact, nobody on here has ever said the EU is great. Many of us see the separatist movement that brexit has become, as stepping back decades where we certainly were not a Great Britain. Neither Pre, during or Post Thatcher who many adore. Without hawking North Sea Oil and Gas to all and sundry and turning the country into a services supplier, with dodgy financial services, we might still be the poor man of Europe.

Look what Norway did with its oil wealth. Compare with us, where it was simply bailout.

Well back to my original posting and despite all the "turmoil" and uncertainty of the last week or so the pound is slowly slowly recovering and is now at 1.1198 as I write this.I have to say that even I am surprised at it's resilience.

My Sister who is visiting next week collected her Euro's from the Post Office and was given a rate of 1.071.
I agree the pound is resiliant at the moment but for the ordinary person the figures quoted in the media are unrealistic.

No not unrealistic Jim,they are the mid market rates. We all know that the tourist rate is always much lower as in when the rate was 1.40 the tourist rate was not so please don't split hairs.
I believe on virtually every post on this political section the mid market rate is the one quoted and certainly if you are transferring currency, for example using Travelwise, then this would be the rate used.

Currency Fair are quoting €1.112 at the time of posting this..

The rate now on XE has actually increased to 1.12. I do believe that the rate quoted to you by Currency fair is what you will actually receive Trev unlike Transferwise who actually give the mid market rate but charge an amount for the transfer- in the end very little difference but certainly well above the tourist rate.

It's no good quoting exchange rates if you can't get them is it? I only know Transferwise but even if their exchange rates are high by the time you devide their charges into the amount you're changing it lowers the rate you're getting by several cents.
Go down the harbour and see if you get 1.12 or use an ATM and see if you get 1.12; you won't. You can talk about Transferwise etc. but it's only a small minority have access to that, most have to exchange money the way I mentioned.

Actually Jim B Transferwise are charging £4.29 one off charge for a transfer of 1k so only 0.004 per £1.
As I say tourist rates are notoriously low and many visitors who visit friends and relatives are now being a bit more careful, transferring money to their accounts via transferwise or similar. This of course does not help the average tourist but then again it never has.

I understand what you're saying but 99% of UK citizens don't have foreign bank accounts or can't set them up overseas unless they have residency so it's really a mute point whether Transferwise or the mid range is 1.12 when most Exchanges are only paying around 1.07. You might as well say it's 2.12 or 100.12; it really means nothing apart to a very tiny minority who are transferring massive amounts of money or using currency transfer companies.
