I rang the Cycamera helpline (80008009). They talked me through the whole process ending up by paying through the JCC (you have to open an account). Just to add to the discussion above, it was a 25 EURO fine for a stop line violation. From the photo, I stopped just over the white line. At least I know now what to do if I get any more!!!!!!! Thanks for all your responses.

The good thing it has focused peoples minds when approaching traffic lights.
I am not convinced this is a good thing
The problem is the lidl crossroads in paphos
here they have changed the entire phases of the lights
before cameras it was opposite flows of traffic had green lights and there was a phasing for people wanting to turn right.
But then cameras came along and the cameras could not cope with large vehicles (for example busses) turning right. This meant that the cameras kept capturing loads of large vehicles turning right (the back end of the vehicles were almost certainly moving over the white lines when the light to turn right went out) there was also no way of predicting when the light would turn right as the right green light went on and then went to red in an instant
So something had to be done - the cameras couldnt be changed.. so the light phasing was..
long story short the phasing of the lights at the lidl crossroads has now been changed and each approach gets its own time on green.. this leads to more congestion at the cross roads and increased delays just so the cameras dont keep taking photos ..
talk about tail wagging the dog..

Yes it has. If I am turning right, I do not cross the line to wait in the middle. I stay behind the line until approaching traffic has ended

you can cross the line and wait in the middle - you just need to ensure that the whole of your vehicle can cross the line whilst the light is on green....

But if you are still waiting in the middle when the lights change to red, you will get fined.. Well, at least I did..

Will the camera take one picture only, or a second one after a second so as to differentiate between vehicles stopping beyond the white line and those actually crossing on red?

more than one picture taken..
And the offence is crossing the white line on a red signal.. So if no part of the car moves over a white line you should not get a fine..

Surely, the fine will be higher if you cross the intersection than if you only cross the white line by a few centimetres, won't it?

I don't think it operates on a sliding scale.

At traffic lights the white line is a mandatory stop line, if you go over the line at a red light you have committed an offence.

Yes, but will the fine be the same as for the much bigger offence of crossing an intersection at red?

At lights where cameras are, are you suppose to wait at the line where the camera symbol is, or the line where the signals are.
When these pictures of camera markings were first painted in the road last year, the transport minister came out with a clarification that these were just there to make people think about the fact that junction is camera controlled and confirmed that it is the white line is the key maker and the trigger for any fine.
You still see people, stopping way before these markings though.

As far as i am aware there is no offence of 'crossing an intersection at red"... the only offence there is (in relation to a red line) is crossing the white line whilst the lights are red.

Now I've become curious and asked Google gemini. According to this the fine for stopping before the intersection is €25, but for crossing the intersection it is € 300.
