Chucking it down up here in Lasa, by looking at the pool I guesstimate around 10mm and counting so far, couldn't get to the car to close the slightly open windows :o

Not too far from us, I wonder if the lightening caused it

Like Trev,
I heard in my case (!) distant rumbles of thunder but over the hills! But unfortunately, not a drop of rain....
I hope it will come soon, everywhere is so parched.

The 'Windy.com' weather site predicts thunder and lightning for our area this afternoon..

Our pool is very full now, and it shows no signs of abating. :)

It's stotting down here, 1.2 mm here on both gauges so far but falling quite heavily at 0.77 mm/min. At this rate, the Aercus is having a little difficulty to cope, but the Davis has no problem. It's eased off, now - after a further ~5 minutes - at 3.0 mm total but I don't think it's finished yet.

Stoating is a good Scottish word for a very heavy downpour amongst many other things eg the rain is stoating down or marvelous ( these shoes are stoating )

Stotting is when the falling rain is so violent it splashes up again. It plays havoc with rain gauges which are notoriously inaccurate in very heavy rain. The gear I have has a deep funnel on the Davis but the Aercus is more a fairly shallow dished tray, both feeding see-saw transducers. I hope to have a new system with no moving parts, IF the German Post (DHL) release it (2 weeks in Frankfurt, sitting there!). It consists of a dome and each raindrop falling on it makes a sound whose characteristics are a function of the drop weight and velocity; all the drop sounds are integrated to calculate the rainfall. Yes, I'm a little sceptical, too, but we will see! It is part of a new hi-tech weather station where the wind speed and direction are calculated from static sensors (no moving parts like the vane and anemometer of my current systems); I understand the technology of this and I'm not sceptical for wind.

Ha,Ha, that's why my measuring of rainfall is more accurate than all the fal-lal. I have a normal 20 l bucket in the garden. 9 buckets have the size of a m2. So its easy to measure the water in the bucket times 9 = l/m2 = mm.

For me, dinging is heavy rain but not necessarily bouncing back up. :)

You've got me there Brian with your lovely Doric?!!! I definitely understand what 'dinging doon ' means in 'my head.' Hammering it down. ⛈. . . . . . . . . That would probably be one of the West Coasters' nearest translations. 😁😁😁 But, I bet you have a more precise description. 🤔

Maggie B

Dinging off a tin roof. 😁
