As an economist Amos - and presumably in touch with worldly affairs - you'll doubtless be aware that Cyprus's gas is not due to come onshore for probably 2-3 years, assuming of course that volumes are sufficient to justify bringing it ashore.
I have a feeling that all the desalination plants in Cyprus run on electric.
I would hope they will switch the power stations over to gas (from oil), generating that electricity.
It will take them 2-3 years to get organised with the desalination plants anyway probably.
What I am saying is they need a longer term strategy for water and electricity; not just a short term fix.

Using gas or oil to generate electricity at the power stations is still a relatively short term solution, though, given that gas and oil are finite resources...
How would you fancy the idea of a
nuclear power station on your doorstep at Zygi, Amos? Built on earthquake-proof foundations, of course!

Don’t think that the words nuclear power and Cyprus should be used in the same sentence... given this country’s poor safety record with fires and explosive incidents.

In which case, in view of the imminent water shortage, why doesn't the Cyprus Govt order some?
They will have plenty of gas to power them.
Pity they couldn't do a deal with the occupied territory's Administration to share some of their water brought over from Turkey by undersea pipeline; they have so much coming in down that pipe they are running about 20% off into the sea!

The North need to have 50MW to bring the water ashore from the pipeline so are in discussions with Aik to set up a deal for them to have power supplies from the south. I believe 2 meetings have taken place so far so maybe a deal can be done to our mutual benefit. Water for Power ?
I assume this would be an interim measure pending the planned undersea power cable from Turkey to the TRNC?
