How condescending, I think the comment by Amos was equally as tongue in cheek as Allesley..perhaps we should not rely on the "emoji" after all we have managed to do so for years!
Not condescending in the slightest. When you joke you don't tend to go into such detail as "do it away from your home so you don't get caught".

One man's joke is another man's emoji perhaps?
Joking aside, barking dogs are a real nuisance, but here in Cyprus doesn't look as though you can do much about it, not
legally anyway.

Well, I don't get the so called 'British sense of humour' and I was born in the UK. Each to their own.

Not sure what the British sense of humour is these days - it used to be the likes of Alf Garnet and Spike Milligan but seems to have totally gone out of fashion these days, and anything else labelled 'humour' is often taken offence by the ever increasing snowflake brigade!
Yep dont know why these snowflakes are offended

There will always be those who scrutinise every post in the hope of finding something that they can criticise, rather than address the actual topic of the OP. Sad, but true, some people need to get a life.

Yes indeed, a thread about barking dogs has become a shaggy dog story...

Alf Garnett was always meant to be taken ironically. Warren Mitchell was very left wing. His character satirised racists. Unfortunately, a lot of racists didn't understand the concept of duality of meaning, and took his views at face value. Al Murray, the Pub Landlord, had the same problem. A chunk of his audience took him at face value and were grossly offended when he stood against Farage in Thanet.
The trouble is, it is far too easy to take things out of context these days. A clip of of Alf Garnet will give the impression that the show was incredibly racist, taken on it's own. Seen in the context of the entire episode it becomes clear that it is in fact the opposite.

Your correct Dominic, the poster couldn't understand why Alf Garnet was out of fashion now days, so I put the clip on to show the reason why.

You've totally missed my point, of course that 1960's humour is offensive in the 21st century but it was not seen so at the time, along with other such programmes such as the possibly less offensive 'Love Thy Neighbour'. The point is that nowadays, since that type of 'raw' humour has died into the distant past, the snowflake brigade are ready to leap on everything where they can, for their own self righteousness, classify anything as offensive to somebody!
Mate im far from a snowflake, but watching these clips today would make any normal person cringe, not only snowflakes..but I take your point.

But that just falls into the trap. The show was satirising racism. It was using humour to ridicule it. It is a very powerful weapon.
A similar thing happen to The Young Ones, written by Ben Elton, who at the time was as PC as you could get.
This clip is clearly ridiculing racism, yet it is has been cut from recent reruns, and was never shown in the USA, when they ran the series on MTV in a continuous loop for several years in the 80s.

Exodus wasn't trying to use satire to make a witty point though, were you Exodus? You were just trying to get a response. Why? Why not try having a conversation without trying to wind people up?

''The show was satirising racism. It was using humour to ridicule it''.... your correct Dominic unfortunately I think the majority of its viewers back in the day, were not laughing at Alf Garnet, they were laughing with him, the same people who laughed at Bernard Manning etc. thank goodness the World is more educated now.

And, of course, it didn't matter what Warren Michell's politics were. He was the actor. The writer Johnny Speight wrote Till Death Do Us Part and was born a cockney in West Ham supporting West Ham etc. For Warren it actually became his bread and butter as it was reprised endlessly in the 70's and 80s as well as morphing into In Sickness and Health . Just going back to barking dogs Brit friends in Limassol got a couple of dogs from the Rescue Centre and after a couple of weeks their Greek and Russians neighbours complained about the dogs barking. They ignored the complaints and the next thing was three policemen turned up . They asked to see the licenses , proof of chip, proof of jabs etc then warned them they faced fines unless they stopped their dogs barking the first being €85 for each dog. They bought collars that sprayed a small amount of citronella to the dogs noses. Hugo stopped barking within an hour and Hattie followed about two hours later. Peace now reigns and even the Brit friends rather enjoy having dogs that no longer bark.

I was attempting to stimulate a constructive debate on this nuisance, whilst still maintaining a reasonable sense of humour.
Point is not to let some of these irritations to our lives here in sunny Cyprus get out of proportion.
Amos.

How do your comments differ, Firefly?
The opening question was offering a solution to barking dogs. The thread has meandered somewhat since then, but that's what sometimes happens. Besides, if it hadn't, Mr Blobby's initial solution would have received far less coverage.
The easiest way to get a thread back on track is not to post asking why it has gone off topic. It is to talk about the original topic.

Well,it's as off-topic as the other posts, so no more and no less acceptable.
Anyway, this thread is now called Political Correctness Gorn Mad
The original thread still exists, I have just stripped all the OT stuff from it.
Now everybody is happy. Woo hoo!
