Have just heard that Sandy Beech was only given 5 years [ 8 - 10 expected]. Hope he serves it here as jails tougher - then get deported to the UK!

Actually, it doesn't necessarily follow that the Central Prison in Nicosia (the only one on the island) is tougher. It all depends on which British prison you compare with.
As to serving his sentence here, that would be the norm. However, he can apply to serve his sentence in Britain. Both countries would have to agree to this however, and either can refuse without giving a reason. The normal timescale for considering an application is 12 to 18 months. I don't think the parole system in Cyprus is that well developed, so it is likely he would serve all 5 years in Cyprus. If he transferred to the UK after, say, 2 years, then he could get parole at the halfway point of his time in the UK. Which, in this case, would be after a total of 3.5 years. Whatever happens, he will end up on the sex offenders register for life, which will have a serious effect on his employment prospects in the future.

Cypriot people detest paedophiles as they are so family orientated. Nicosia Prison is the best place for him - in my opinion - with no parole - and serves his whole 5 years. Then deport him!

I'm going to split this topic, so the recent posts are separate from the original article. I don't mind your discussion continuing, but it is fairer that it bubbles along in it's own thread.

The non-specific parts of this thread were moved to their own thread.

A curious game of chess.
