Our governments have undertaken to cut inner city pollution drastically, and cannot achieve the targets without banning fossil fuelled cars. Battery technology is on a cusp of drastic improvements http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/130380- ... er-the-air and will soon not only revolutionise car technology but also the way we use electricity in the home. Hydrogen is a possibility, the best so far being Honda's technology which converts the hydrogen into electricity, but the mass production of hydrogen remains problematic and expensive. One of the more interesting solutions being to produce it domestically using solar energy..... :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_fuel
Are these the same governments who only a few years ago, were telling everyone and their dog, to buy diesel cars as they were cleaner?

Yes I think that was what Bograt was referring to.
Hold hands up again - yes I do indeed mean hydrogen. Fool woman.

That is a very interesting read, thank you Devil. I asked, and now I know.

There just isn't a perfect answer, is there. Perhaps I'll go back to riding a horse to get around, as I did in my youth. Plenty of emissions still, but generally harmless.

Tesla shares went up nearly 10% today as everybody goes mad for electric cars....The new Tesla 3 would be ideal for little Cyprus with a cruising range of 310 miles... nice promotion video....Tesla already has 500.000 orders - BMW will deliver 100.000 next year, so this is only the start...

Would you buy one, Max, if Cyprus had the infrastructure to run it? I just think I might. Perhaps a little test drive whilst I'm in the UK.

One problem. The right hand version is not due for production until early 2019. Back to the horse then.

For the version 35.000 USD and the exchange rate at the moment for the dollar and some subsidy from the Government the price would be ca 25.000 Euro with cruising range of 220 miles not bad! And until 2019 also Cyprus will have more charging stations than at this moment.

You may like to drive to Ayia Napa - I don't. I used my BMW just for short rides in the Paphos district the last five years, while for excursion tours into the Forest I use my 4x4... :) If I had to drive more often longer distance I would opt for the 350 mile version from Tesla. :!: or take a taxi :D
On the Road
Supercharging
Stay charged while you’re on the road using the Tesla Supercharger network. Placed along well traveled routes, a Supercharger provides up to 270 kilometers of range in as little as 30 minutes. :!:

When I was a kid, born in Park Street, Luton, we had Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip driving past once a year in their lovely old Rolls Royce limosuine, waving at as they were slowly chauffered past, on their way to a weekend break with Lord and Lady Werhner at their Luton Hoo mansion (gardens and lakes courtesy of the famous landscapist, Capability Brown).

But on a more frequent basis, horses towing carts used to trundle up and down Park St. Mum always sent me out with a bucket and spade to collect the horse dollops, for her treasured roses in the back garden (where the scullery and outside loo were, too...)

Just up the road was a weekly lifestock auction / market. One day, a frisky bull managed to escape from there and came rampantly charging down the street outside our house. It was so funny to watch how they managed to corner it, then calm it, then gently lead it back...

Cheers (and sorry if I drifted off topic a bit here)- AL :)

Given that fossil fuel is a finite resource, of course electric cars will one day happen. We won't have a choice. And if you have to wait overnight, bring a pillow.

Does anyone actually believe the manufacturers figures? When you see a petrol/diesel car advertised with a fuel consumption of 80mpg - do you take it as absolute truth? No!

Why, then, should we take the rather pathetic figure of 220 miles range before recharge as absolute? A car with 4 passengers and a couple of suitcases travelling in heavy stop-start traffic is clearly going to severely reduce the advertised consumption range of any car whether petrol, diesel or electric.

These figures are going to have to substantially be improved before electric cars are going to be commercially viable.

Hudswell
I wonder what YOUR part in reducing CO 2 emissions is as you point at my two cars? At least I have produced so far in the last years > 300.000 kWh electricity from Solar and Wind to help mitigate climate change. So I think I have contributed enough to drive two cars without feeling bad about it.
I have scanned the leaflet from from Nova Limassol which was the leading PV company that time in Cyprus...showing my installation of 20 kWp with a tracking system and I can tell you that the price 2009 was more than double than nowadays.. :!:

Max, these two cars of yours, do you ever drive them both at the same time? Because if you don't, there will be no extra impact on the environment. So to keep Hudswell happy, only drive one car at a time. Leave the other car parked.

Problem solved. :D

I must say that I've been mightily impressed with the Bloomberg review on the Tesla 3 link posted in this thread. Amazing concept of design and engineering, it really is...

For example, people are using them as campers! Apparently, the seats fold flat, so that a person up to 6' 9" (206cm) tall can sleep flat in the back, gazing up at the stars through the glass roof!

Not only that, but if they are in a hot and humid ambience, they can have full climate control running all night (silently), for a mere 7% loss of range. How cool is that, eh?

In my old automotive A/C days (late 70's early 80's) I was once invited up to a factory in NW UK that manufactured APCs (Armoured Personnel Carriers). They wanted a silent solution to keeping all occupants cool, and inferred that the MOD was interested in this notion for tank crews, too..

Sadly, at that time, the technology simply didn't exist. To provide them with A/C meant keeping the vehicle engine running, which meant noise, which the MOD didn't want! I wonder if the military have now solved this problem, but have classified it as a state secret?

Cheers- AL ;)

Are you talking the full-blown military version Humvee, Lloyd, or the dumbed-down civvy model?

We have the latter around here, as stretched limos for weddings. Quite funny to follow behind, while the chauffuer tries to get around a small roundabout, LOL!

@Jacs: Beauty lays in the eye of the beholder. Often, a quite ugly object takes on a personna of it's own, and becomes classically beautiful.. Example: the Fleet Air Arm 'Fairy Gannet'

Oops, off topic again...
