This is very, very true.
The comment is a truism.

One can also say there is no correlation between having no qualifications and having common sense.

Exactly, so why should having a degree make you any more able to vote?

Not on this thread, but on at least one other thread it has been mooted. And the whole "Uneducated people vote for Trump" schtick implies a view that some people think it would be a lot better if these people didn't vote at all.

I think your precis may have gone a step too far.

I don't recall anyone saying that all Trump voters were uneducated.

What I do recall is an analysis of why Trump won - he had greater appeal than the more 'cerebral' Clinton.

Nobody said all Trump voters were uneducated.

It was more "Uneducated people voted for Trump".

Is that a false statement?

Uneducated people do vote. So in the US election uneducated people will have voted for either Trump or Clinton.

I agree. I wasn't the one quoting passages like this:

"Trump’s approach to the campaign — relying on emotional appeals while glossing over policy details — may have resonated more among people with lower education levels as compared with Clinton’s wonkier and more cerebral approach."

What is wrong with the passage quoted? Its a view is it not?

Do you disagree with it?

True.... and they did vote for Trump.

If you look at traditional Democrat voters (not fully relevant in this vote) then the Democratic vote is strongest in the Eastern and Western Seaboards, particularly California and New York - also the more educated and wealthy areas.

The bible belt is also strongly Republican, along with states like Arkansas, South Dakota, Idaho, Alabama etc. Some of the poorest and least educated states as well.

It is therefore easy to claim Trump's vote was strong with the least educated parts of America and weakest with the most-educated areas....

You dont need a degree in linguistics to understand that if a statement is made along the lines "uneducated people voted for Trump" to understand that this is meant to be understood, with any one who has common sense, to mean "a MAJORITY of uneducated people voted for Trump".

Now you bring us back to common sense.

Ive seen many cuts of the electorate to try and understand voting pattern - by age, by income, by location, by highest academic qualification, etc.

But I must admit that I have never seen voting pattern attributed to common sense or the lack of it.

Its beyond me to say that Trump voters had more or less common sense than Clinton voters. But as 'common sense' is unmeasurable and 95% of the population have got it, I don't really think that it matters that much in elections.

You cannot say that common sense is unmeasurable and then say that 95% of the population have got it. The two phrases are mutually exclusive.

True! But the truth is "common sense" is two a penny. Its not worth bragging about. If you can breath, you've got it.

So why are you making out that its so important?

We obviously have very different opinions as to what constitutes common sense.
