Galini wrote: Mon Jul 10, 2017 9:32 am Hmmm interesting thread. I will confess that I was getting more and more irritated to hear the Cap St George advert on Sunshine going on about the unique unspoiled location because I remember that beautiful area BEFORE they started tearing it up to build this development so was thinking "well yes it was until you built that monstrosity"

HOWEVER, having read Steve Matthews post concerning the benefit to wildlife, increase in sea birds, return of the seals etc I have to say that it has made me take a little bit of a rethink. I will have to take a walk along there again and have a look for myself.

(Of course I still think that the concrete blocks are awful but hey, you can't have everything lol)

;) :o
Galini, if you have the time I would be very interested to hear your views after your walk.

Thank you.

I hope that one hotel does not lead to another. Success often leads to imitation.......

I totally agree. The individual buildings on this development are, in my opinion, ugly, stark, tasteless concrete boxes. I can't see the appeal, at all.

It's quite sad that so many current developments around Paphos have a similar look when instead, the developers could use lovely, natural, local limestone to build more traditional looking buildings that would also improve with age.

Crikey, Max, that is an interesting revelation (which I never even knew about)!

Do you have any links that explore this contentious issue a little deeper, please?

Thanks- AL :o

The island lies 280 meters off the harbor at Agios Georgios-tis-Peyia on the western coast of Cyprus, approximately 17 kilometers north of the city of Paphos, which served as the capital of Cyprus during the Hellenistic period (323-30 B.C.). Its commanding cliffs rise some 21 meters up from the sea; severe erosion has left its flanks dangerously steep and exposed. In 1981, the spectacular setting attracted developers wishing to build a casino resort on the island, to be connected to the mainland by a causeway. Under the direction of Dr. Sophocles Hadjisavvas, the Cypriot Department of Antiquities conducted trial excavations on Yeronisos in 1982, establishing the presence of extensive archaeological remains which led to the expropriation of the island as important resource for the cultural heritage of Cyprus.

I mentioned already the link above https://www.nyu.edu/projects/yeronisos/yer2.html

That is absoluteley awesome! Thanks Max-and thank God that the developers were blocked from building a casino on top of this sacred island...

Linked by a causeway? OMG... I'm sure that all the Russian millioanaires buying these multi-million € concrete sheds would have preferred a helicopter trip to and fro? Why not have a casino attached to their Club, FCS?

As a matter of fact, WHERE is this supposed club house / restaurant on their original site plans? Boogered if I can see it!

ATB- AL :)

Morning,

The casino plan wasn't anything to do with the current development. Back in the 80's, there was talk of building on the island with the causeway etc. The survey of the island to this end revealed the fact that it had been previously inhabited. Archaeological works followed which showed inhabitation from as early as 3000BC.

Flossie wrote: Fri Jul 14, 2017 9:16 am Sailed past Maniki yesterday and there appears to be no access to the public as previously stated - it's been well developed by Korantina purely for the use if Cap St George clients with huge gazebos/parasols/sunbeds etc and a 'private' bar area, in fact the 'new' road is purely for their use and is in fact a dead end!
I've been to have another, closer look and to actually ask the resort about the situation. The parasols and sunbeds are in fact free for the public to use! All the roads in and through the resort are public roads. The pathways along the coast are open to everyone and are deliberately wheel chair friendly. Anyone can go there. Also, along the road from Coral Bay towards sea caves are numerous signs advertising Maniki Beach to the public. The resort are actively encouraging the public to go there.
Unlike a local sailing club that has a big sign saying 'members only'
(obviously the last sentence is meant purely as an observational, light hearted, tongue in cheek comment 😉)

Thank you to everyone who has replied to this thread. It does sound like this could well be an asset to the area which is great. We will go there in September when we are over for sure, and see what's what. It should be within walking distance for us, so it could be lovely.

I spent a little time asking some staff members about the set up at the resort and then enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon on the beach with my daughter. We were made to feel most welcome. There is a public road right down to this beach. ☺

This was on the beach right in front of the resort main building, with the beds, life guard, etc. There is also the little know bay at the eastern end of the resort that I think is sometimes referred to as Roman harbour, as in earlier in this thread.
It's not really set up for tourists as it's a little more rugged looking, there's only a tiny but still very pretty little sandy beach in an otherwise rocky bay. It's really quite beautiful. You still often see many people using this bay for swimming, fishing, etc. Again, the resort has built two different, open pathways to this bay, from different directions, that the public are free to use. It's in this bay that I regularly see a kayaking group/club and large school groups enjoying activities such as snorkelling, etc.

The whole stretch of coastline is perfect for an early morning/late afternoon walk. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I've been using and enjoying this coastline for many years. As time passes, the development (ugly, in my opinion) has grown but the physical coast line has remained open and accessible to all and the amount of rubbish has noticeably gone down whilst the amount and variety of wildlife has noticeably gone up.

Flossie and Bograt, I invite you to join the many walkers, horse riders, cyclists, beach goers and dog walkers that continue to enjoy the coast, here. ☺

Thank you Steve, I will be delighted to do so.

Another friendly, and helpful, post on PL. I needed that today for various reasons, so thank you all. Have a nice day everyone.

@Flossie, Bograt, ét al

Always remember that a mile or so south of the Cap St George development, you have the Yiallos (Round House) Taverna. It's right on a smashing part of the Sea Caves coast, very close to the sea.

The food is excellent and very reasonably priced, as are the drinks. Very nice loos as well...

Cheers- AL :)

Only been to Muse once, it was nice I agree. I am looking forward to visiting CSG now, roll on September (and hopefully the humidity will have done one by then...)

Yes I know Yiallos. Lovely setting, but we don't go there much any more.

We drove to Cap St George's the other day to see what it was like. I took some photos, and I could easily turn it into a blog. Is there an interest to have a blog on the area? I wouldn't normally ask but as it is a commercial venture I don't want to be seen to be promoting it unfairly.

I'd be interested in photos etc, but I take your point regarding promotion. You could link it in with a blog about the St George's area, including the harbour and those interesting caves that are in the cliff overlooking it? Which I'm sure you've seen, but if not, have a peek.....
