We refuse to use them and have walked out of shops before now if there isn't a real person manning the checkout.

Agree 100% its just about store saving money, I too have walked out, my money my choice,

Ironically, there is usually a member of staff near the checkout ready to offer to help - OK I only go supermarket shopping once a week, so perhaps at other times there isn't someone around, however, the automatic checkout is being used.

Sainsburys opened cashier free store, but it wasnt a success
