I always get impressed at how many different English ways the word Poppadom can be spelt. But that was true in the UK too.

I have learned to bite my tongue over the dreadful spelling, grammar, text-speak and failure to use spell-checkers on all forums.

My point with signs in Cyprus is that there is a very large English population and it should not be beyond their capabilities to have one of them proof read before production. Even the use of a spell checker would expose the majority of the errors. And, yes, all the signmaking and graphics packages have spell-checkers in a large number of languages.

Those who know me are aware that I rarely blanket criticise Cyprus or Cypriots the way so many ex-pats do and often argue against those, for example, who suggest that Cypriots are "the worst drivers in the world". But as a former signmaker I am more than aware of the obvious and unnecessary errors I see.

Words fail me! The anglicised spelling of the Greek name τουλίπα is toulipa. There is no 'u' sound in Greek - it is sounded using 'ou'. So it is a perfectly understandable translation even if it is spelt differently some where else. If we get critical to this level it will eventually lead to the end of the quirkiness and the beauty of Cyprus. I love it that toast is spelt as 'tost' on the menus!

That's rather a lot of words for someone whose words have failed them!!!

The banner in question was not an anglicised spelling of a Greek word. The banner is in 2 sections. The top is Greek and the bottom English. Therefore the English should be correctly spelled. The incorrect spelling is simply that.

Fully agree with that. My Greek teacher says "did the message get across". We make more mistakes in Greek than just the odd misspelling. The funniest one I hear from time to time is the Brit who wants to say "good Morning" and instead says "good octopus" The GC's normally don't bat an eye lid.
