The British High Commission has advised that there is a rumour circulating that the Cypriot Government has stopped issuing MEU1/MEU3 documents because of Brexit.

Residency documents are being issued normally by the Cypriot authorities.

The British High Commission in Cyprus is encouraging UK nationals resident in Cyprus to regularise their residency status and safeguard their rights after Brexit by applying for their MEU1 or MEU3 residency documents as soon as possible.

If the UK leaves the EU with no deal on 31 October, the Cypriot Government has confirmed that they will process any applications for MEU1/MEU3 which are in the pipeline, so it is important to start the process as soon as possible.

In the event of No Deal, after 31 October, UK nationals resident in Cyprus will be classed as third country nationals and the residency process is then likely to be longer and more involved and it is unlikely that any rights acquired due to the length of residency will be honoured.

If you do not have an MEU1 and/or MEU3, please go to the Immigration Department with your passport. They will tell you what documentation they require you to bring and will either give you a firm appointment or tell you to just turn up with your paperwork and it will be processed.

If you have been here continuously for 5 years or more and do not have your MEU1, please tell the reception desk that you wish to obtain your MEU1 and MEU3 in one go and they should give you two slips of paper, one with the requirements for the MEU1, and a second with the requirements for the MEU3.

And a final reminder for those who have been living here for a long time. Any residency stamps you may have in your passport are now of no consequence - the only paperwork which will be recognized is the MEU1 and MEU3. Reside

Please remember that without an MEU1 and/or MEU3, post-Brexit, you will only be able to stay in Cyprus for up to 90 days in every 180 visa-free.

Lincoln, Not sure where the message came from or when it was issued, but I know 3 people who have all lived here long term well over 5 years. They all seem adamant that their previous yellow slips, ARC’s or stamps in their passports are sufficient. Is there anywhere that I can get a copy of the above message from the BHC to send to their email addresses?

Lincoln, Not sure where the message came from or when it was issued, but I know 3 people who have all lived here long term well over 5 years. They all seem adamant that their previous yellow slips, ARC’s or stamps in their passports are sufficient. Is there anywhere that I can get a copy of the above message from the BHC to send to their email addresses?

“Whatever anyone may have said in the past about alternative documents, alien registration certificates, any colour books or stamps in passports, it is now about getting an MEU1 or MEU3. I know that people get a bit fed up about us going on about this, but it’s important to protect your position here,” he said.

“Whatever old documents you’ve got, you still need to get an MEU1 or MEU3. One reason for that is to guarantee your rights post-Brexit. That includes coming in and going out of the airport. When you come in after Brexit, you will show your document and won’t get a stamp in your passport that is only valid for 90 days. Also, to access the new public health system Gesy, you need an MEU1 or an MEU3,” he noted.
