There has been a lot of controversy over asbestos. I remember when the mines were working, the whole of the area was covered by a pall of dust, right down to the villages. However, that dust was mainly from the serpentine rock, carrying the seams of asbestos, which were 6-10 mm thick i.e. the length of the fibres. There were a number of cases of pneumosilicosis amongst the workers and even in non-workers in the villages but only a handful of cases of asbestosis over the years. It was considered that the fibres were generally too coarse to penetrate the lungs, unlike the Canadian asbestos. That having been said, I don't know how good the diagnoses were.

In my 1952 photos, there are 2 shots at about 8 minutes in of www.youtube.com/watch?v=nap-Dx8P8wk

Thanks Devil. Enjoyed watching your very informative video, and Max, for posting your two photos. I used to work in Rochdale and our school was close to Turner Brothers Asbestos works. Many people in the area, some who did not even work at the factory, died from asbestosis. Local mp at the time, Squirrel Smith, denied many times in parliament, that asbestos could be dangerous.
