Vehicle documents

Post by memory man »

What documents MUST you carry in your vehicle?

eg. Road tax, Insurance, log book, MOT certificate !

Would photo copies suffice?

I was stopped a couple of weeks ago at Peyia police station

and the officer politely said " I'm just checking your documents sir"

He typed ( probably ) my car reg into his portable machine and
30 secs later said thank you, everything is OK and waved me on.

So, Do I really need to keep docs. in car?

Exactly the same thing happened to me about 4/5 years ago down in Paphos.

Is there such a thing as an 'original' tax disc? :D

I was stopped this morning for a document check at Debenhams roundabout.

Exactly the same experience as memory man at the opening of this thread.

Sorry to dig up an old post .

This from Abbeygate website .

Is it true that I must carry all my vehicle documentation in the vehicle at all times? And what happens if the vehicle is stolen?
Yes it is! Whilst driving your car on the road in Cyprus you MUST have the following documents with you:

Driving licence
The car´s Ficha Tecnica (showing the technical details of the car) or Log Book if UK registered
All your insurance documents - receipt, certificate of insurance (for UK vehicles) and Green Card

If your vehicle is stolen and the documents have gone with it the situation can become problematical. So, although slightly inconvenient, we recommend that whenever you leave your vehicle unattended that you take the documents with you. However if you don't you will have to arrange to replace them before your claim can be settled. The procedures involved to get replacement documents are as:

Attend the Police Station and make a statement.
Apply for a new Ficha Tecnica at your local ITV centre - probably takes around a week and you need to take the Denuncia with you.
Once you have the Instancia and a new Ficha Tecnica you then apply for duplicate papers at your Trafico Office

Or maybe just do as you please. "This is Cyprus" As was quoted by a very senior politician on AlJezeera recently

The main reason to keep your insurance documents etc in the car, is that you can show them to the police officer on the spot. instead of having to produce them later at the police station.
