Some of us may today may offer congratulations to Donald Trump and wish him every success as the 47th President of the United States. Many of us may not like him as a person with his typical American brash, loud-mouthed rhetoric but support his drive for peace in the world, lower taxes, reduce regulation and promote growth and greater prosperity, who would not want that?
President Trump says, and I quote:
• be a force for peace in Ukraine and Gaza
• strengthen NATO, as the peace of the democracies is secured by showing strong defence
• lower taxes and cut the costs of government.
• reinforce faster US growth that should be an example to the UK and the rest of Europe.
• will liberate business sufficiently to boost jobs and investment.
• help the West by expanding output of gas, leaving them less dependent on Russia and the Middle East.
We must hope the UK Labour government thinks again about how they work with our main ally. Keeping the Chagos Islands and keeping our current Ambassador in post would start to correct the damage they have done to the relationship.
