Air-cons to be installed in schools powered by photo-voltaic

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Yesterday's article in the Cyprus Mail pointed out that at more than 400 school buildings in Cyprus photo-voltaic modules will be installed to power air-conditioning as the weather gets more hot every year. A very good move in my opinion as the sun produces the most energy in summertime when air conditions in classrooms could be installed in order to reduce the high temperatures and humidity there.

As there is also funding from the EU’s post-covid recovery fund available which needs only to be applied and would help also the local businesses to provide installation of PV, air-cons and windows worth E100m.

I forgot to mention that also for private households it is perfect to install some photo-voltaic modules on your roof or garden to reduce most of your electricity costs immediately and you can use your air-con much more without worries.

Also for that a GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY is available. For every kWp (3 modules) one installs, it is 250 Euro with a maximum of 1000 Euro. (4 kWp). Better than nothing!! Prices for PV came down a lot in the past 5 years, so why not phone Green Air Paphos for a quote: 26 941 555 ask for Lina or Andreas.

Just cannot understand why every school roof and public building here in Cyprus is not covered with solar panels. Last week I read that the temperature in one school, without any pupils, was 40c. Even when it is a bit cooler, classrooms must be around 30c as pupils generate a lot of heat. I worked in a school in the UK and to accommodate more pupils, classrooms were made smaller. Someone also thought it was a good idea to lower ceilings, which was fine in the winter, but in summer made the rooms even warmer. Aircon had to be installed to keep the rooms at a workable temperature during the summer.

In today;s CM it say that an installer(s) will be selected in each district; just one in Paphos. Surely this should be put to a tender process?

Correct, this is the way it will be done. The only problem is that there are not many experts for PV in the Gov. to understand that photo-voltaic is a long term solution and cheap Chinese components, even when less expensive, are not the way to go. Cheap can be more costly and would give PV a bad name. There are new solar panels on the market with 400 Wp and more, but with much higher efficiency and this way you need much less space on the roof and at the same moment more life span.
