Found this chap looking very sorry for himself in the harbour yesterday but if he hangs around long enough hundreds of his mates will be joining him soon on their Autumn migration!

Re: All By Myself!
What type of bird is it?
I usually see a few on the rocks when snorkelling at Latchi in September - it is easier to sneak up on a bird to get a photo when you're swimming than when you're walking.
I don't know the name though.

Re: All By Myself!
The clue's in the filename, it's a Cormorant! But you need to be careful as a relative, the Shag, can be around & they look very similar?

Hint: the file name gives a clue
PS: at Lake Constance, and the Rhine river, close to where I grew up, they were such a problem for the local fishermen that the government allowed them the be shot at if I remember properly (in the cantons of Thurgau and Schaffhausen).

I feel a bit silly now, but thanks for the replies! I have an underwater camera and keep hoping to get a photo of one of them diving into the sea from a rock, but no luck yet. Maybe this will be my lucky year....

Re: All By Myself!
Unfortunately, you won't see them diving off rocks as they don't do this. Instead you need to catch them when they are on the surface of the water as that's when they dive to feed but you'll need to be quick off the mark as the movement is very fast!

Re: All By Myself!
I've dug out a photo from my old UK archives which shows a Cormorant in feeding mode which is what you need to look out for. Notice how low it is in the water, this is a sure sign but getting the diving photo is very hard & I didn't manage it!
