Restricted to the areas around their residences

Post by kansas »

I don't want to open up a can of worms here, and we are wholly supportive of the measures being taken. Having read the Cyprus Mail today which gives an English version of the President's speech of last night, we're wondering how to interpret the statement regarding exercise, i.e. "exercising and walking a dog are also allowed if they do not exceed two people and they are restricted to the area around their residences".

How does one interpret the last part? Around the block? Around the village? Within sight of home? Inside your garden area, should you have one?

The reason I mention this is that in our small village we could have numerous people walking round even if they are two metres apart.

With apologies if anyone else has already mentioned this.

Thanks in advance

Yes, its a bit ambiguous as things often are when translated from Greek to English. I took it to mean you could exercise in your local area. That could be defined as a walk which does not involve taking the car to the start point of your intended walk...
But to be sure you could ask your Mukhtar or maybe the police for clarification? The speech the President made also said that you could only exercise once a day, but not sure if dog owners are allowed to walk the dog twice?

Thanks Dee. I was wondering if there was a native Greek speaker on this forum who could give an actual translation/meaning.

I think it is deliberately ambiguous so that it can be enforced only when necessary. I don't think I will get questioned if I happen to walk to the other side of Polemi and back. However, I think I might if I try and drive to the Akamas and have a walk there.

I think the next few days will be interesting as there are some slightly hysterical posts being put on FB about having to complete forms, send SMS' giving the reason for leaving home and being sent to jail if you do not comply. This may all be true but appear to be adding to the confusion because of lack of validity, so we''ll see what the next few days bring about and will take the safe option of walking close to our property.

Thanks for the replies......

You do either have to complete a form or send a text message as per message below from Government.

I hope that those in villages don't have to travel to Paphos to get forms just to go to the village shop

If you take the form with you, who would you give it to? Can you use it more than once if no one asks you for it. Do you need separate forms if you want to visit the pharnacy as well, or you need to visit another food shop, such as a butcher or deli?
Wonder if other nationalities have rec notification of this change, ie Russian, Chinese , Arabic speakers.

I expect time will tell.

Don't undersztand why this is so funny sorry. The lockdown started at 18.00hrs. So maybe it takes some more time than 45 minutes to get an answer.
