This is thanks to EU law, a couple of years ago the EU decided that companies could not pass on the charges from more expensive cards, i.e. if a credit card company charges 2.5% and the debit card company charges 0.5% you can't charge people who use a credit card the extra 2% nor can you give the customer who uses the debit card a discount. The result is Credit card companies can now charge what they like and are putting up their charges.

Aparently you can still use a UK visa credit card for the forseeable future even though we have passed the cut off day of 19th January, this is being reviewed by Amazon and Visa to come up with a coprimise. 8-)
I started off with nothing and have most of it left !

You can always ask your bank if they do a Mastercard.

This was in the newspapers on the 17th of this month..

" Amazon said on Monday it would not stop accepting UK-issued Visa Inc (V) credit cards on its British website later this month as it had proposed, adding that it was working with Visa to resolve a dispute over payment fees.

The expected  change regarding  the use of Visa credit  cards  on Amazon.co.uk  will no longer take place on January 19," the company said in an email to customers.
"We are working  closely  with Visa on a potential solution  that will enable  customers to continue using their Visa credit cards  on  Amazon.co.uk."

Although I have bought things from Amazon UK I didn't get any emails at all from them

Did you use a Visa credit card to pay for any of your orders, Trev?

We mostly don't, but we purchased a couple of tablets this year and for those, we decided to pay by CC instead.

I received notification to say the card could no longer be used, a follow up to remove the card from my account and then this one to say it looked like an agreement was being discussed.

As mentioned it is a few months since I bought anything. But I did use a Visa Debit card..
I just wondered why I had not had any notification..
But it really does not matter now as the cost of getting anything from the UK arm of Amazon is rediculous

Not my experience. I had to use a different card to pay on Amazon.de.

As did I, after the original announcement.

But a further email now indicates otherwise.

However, I only use CC on very rare occasions with them so recent purchases have been with DC as normal.

Is your credit card a visa card? Is it a credit card or a debit card. I believe the fees charged by VISA are different between the two? This may explain why Amazon accepts the one but not the other.

There you have the reason. Amazon specifically denied the use of VISA credit cards.

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 1:13 am There is always a difference to the retailer on what is charged by Visa and Mastercard. This was a spat between Visa and Amazon, where Visa would not come down to what Amazon wanted to pay. But I thought it was all sorted now?
It has, for the moment...

This relevant parts of the message received around 24 January from my card company:

Hi

Good news, Amazon have decided to continue accepting payments using Visa credit cards while they work closely on a solution.

What does this mean for you?

This means you can still use your card to make purchases as normal for the time being.

Thanks for bearing with us during this time. Happy shopping.
