Like any other power hungry Dictator, it will all end in tears for the Great Sultan,... rule one, do not upset the Israelis, rule two dont issue cheques your Arse cant honour.

Termites Dream wrote: Fri Dec 20, 2019 9:28 am Various reports are that Turkey is operating in Libya with Special Forces and intends to build a base as part of their cooperation agreement. This has resulted in Egypt's President Sisi stating that this would not be tolerated as it threatens Egypt's National Security. Turkey appears intent on being friendless in the region. We will have to see if any of this plays out.
There is a good article in the Independent, re Turkey sending troops to Turkey, like most other dictators, Edogan will end up in the dustbin of History, its only a matter of time before Turkeys friends in Tripoli, are beaten, Edogan is taking Turkey into areas, were they should not get involved, but this Despot sees himself reviving the Ottoman empire,.....

I suspect he is playing the big 'I am man' for home consumption as he seems to be losing support there.

Like many Dictators before him, he is power mad, he dreams of the Ottoman Empire raising from the ashes, with him as Sultan, He built himself a one thousand room Palace, changed the laws to give himself more powers, contrived a fake Coup d'état, so to give himself an excuse to imprison anyone who dares question him, he has sent troops to the horn of Africa, Middle East etc, he is playing with fire, and in my opinion will get burnt.

I wonder why the USA has done nothing about Turkey contravening the NATO agreement - and allowing Erdogan to basically flout international law...

Erdogan is trying to distract attention away from his falling popularity at home by indulging in grandiose foreign policy moves. the new Mayor of Istanbul is the real threat to Erdogan.
What astonishes me is the complete lack of a robust challenge from both the EU and the UK, particularly as a Guarantor power for Cyprus. Having said that, the UK response to 1974 was well below what I would have expected.

The 'peace' talks held over the weekend, re the situation in Libya, name Turkey as being involved in the civil war. They have gotten fully involved in Syria, now Libya and expansion of their influence is obviously on the agenda.

Unfortunately like most other nations, Putin, will look after Russia's interests, he is on opposing sides with Turkey in Syria and Libya , yet sells Turkey Missile systems, win win for Putin, gets Billions of dollars from Turkey, while at the same time weakens Nato. he will not stop Turkeys shenanigans in the seas around Cyprus, because a gas pipe line from Israel/Cyprus to Greece, is bad news for his own pipe lines.
