Abandoned Villages - Prastio

Post by Dominic »

The Diarizos Valley really is the gift that keeps on giving. This is the fourth abandoned village we've visited recently. However, this one is a bit special, as it is an abandoned village that is truly abandoned. To get to it, you have to leave the safety of your car, and wade through shoulder-high thistles and grasses. Is it worth the journey? You decide...

A very interesting but obviously a bit painful exploration of this abandoned village Prastion-Kelokethara. As I learned from PRIO it was only abandoned on 1964 when one Turkish Cypriot shepherd was murdered and all 83 inhabitants left. So from 1964 until today, that is not that much time.... and there is nearly nothing left what one can see on your nice blog, Dominic.

Yes the nice old church Agios Ilias was obviously recently renovated. There is a link where one can see how the church looked before renovation...
If you click on the images they come up in a quite good quality. There is also a photo from the abandoned school building...maybe more below the village.

Ta. I did search on PRIO and got three Prastios. None of them was that one though. How odd...

I have found this to happen before - I think some internet providers seem to limit your search availability on google - i don't know how but some give you loads of results and others do not - As you are an IT man maybe you can figure out why as i don't understand it.

Somebody posted this info on Facebook:

Abondened in February 1964.
The shepherd Kel Ali was killed by the gunman group of Drasibavlou village.
His sheeps was stolen.
The villagers was so afraid that they left village in the night and they took refuge in the much bigger Turkish village of Mallia.

I bookmarked PRIO in the past and this link with the map leads you to the right district. There are many villages in Cyprus with the same name...
