Hopefully, if things work out ok next week we won't have to worry about water shortages in the future! ;)

Are they getting that desalination unit up and running again?

Err, which planet have you been on for the last 18 months? The reunification talks should be resolved one way or the other next week & if positive then "the north" has enough water for the whole of the island, via Turkey of course! Mind you, the Cypriots could always poo-poo things again when they vote on the deal but that's a story yet to be written :!:

Until the fat lady has sung on that front I would prefer to rely on desalination or rain.

The water supply from Turkey is 75 million m3 and 50% are supposed to be used for farming
specially to irrigate the huge Mesaoria planes to improve standard of living there.

Water demand for the Greek Cypriot area is nearly 4 times of that 75 million m3 with 275 million m3 and rising...(data are from 2014)
Domestic and irrigation are the two main sectors of water demand in Cyprus. Water demand is characterised by a pronounced seasonal peak in summer and is related to agricultural irrigation and tourist activities. Based upon the latest data from the Water Development Department, [15], the total annual water demand in the Government controlled areas is 275 Mm3 per year, of which the dominated water use sector is agriculture and as noted earlier, in Section 2, accounts for 64% of the water demand needs of the island. Domestic water supply to households consumes 28.4%, 4.7% corresponds to the touristic and hotel water demands and industrial suppliers make up the 2.9% water demands.

So I am having doubts about that water story.... even when I personally think it would be a good idea in
exchange of electricity. But Turkey already is planning to supply electricity as well via cables under the ocean.

Yes we should be worried.

All the rain we have had recently and reserves are still low.
I remember, not that long ago, when we only had water for 3 days per week, if current rainfall persists, we may avoid this happening in 2017. But it will always be a threat. The Asprokemas desalination plant has been decommissioned.

Let's get this into perspective shall we!

Firstly, the water from the North/via Turkey is 75mcm per annum & is in addition to the natural resources that provide Cyprus with water not instead of!

Secondly, there will be no water shortages in 2017, sorry Wallace!

Thirdly, in the event of a unified Cyprus (hopefully), Turkey will not fund an electricity supply cable!

I am not minimising the risks that Cyprus faces, it is the most stressed water country in Europe. The Govt here needs to address this amongst other things!

Apus
A settlement is required, but is not guaranteed, having been in Cyprus many years, this is not a foregone solution. In the meantime, water supply will remain an issue.

In fairness if 74 hadn't happened they would still have had to dam the valley. Paphos needs it's water.

Thanks Dominic.
Reservoirs only 28% full, that's not good.
