I know there's a tree that claims to be over 200 years old in the grounds of Kolossi Castle in Limassol but also another (posted on a Cyprus blog in 2010) which says it's apparently over 800 years old. Not sure if that's the same one you're referring to?

No that's an oak tree. The one I photographed is an olive tree.

There are quite a few ancient oaks dotted around near Polemi. They seem to have them by old water features.

Olive trees have a very long life span, whilst still capable of producing top quality olives after 1,000+ years. The tree in your photo is similar in girth to the trees in the Garden of Gethsemane just outside Jerusalem. Although the olive trees there are purported to be 2,000 years old, scientific analysis has dated them to around 1092. As their girth is consistent with your photo, I would say that an age of 1,000 years for 'your' tree is certainly possible! Carbon dating has been used to prove the age of many old olive trees with results ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 years.

The oldest known olive tree - which is still alive -is in Mouriscas, Abrantes (Portugal) with a verified age of 3350 years!

Have you seen the huge old tree in Simou square? (Sorry, can't remember if it's an olive or what! )

Never mind, I found it. That is an olive tree too. I shall have to check it out. I should add tape measure to my list of 4x4 essentials!

Maybe not the oldest tree but, this one is in the village of Polis in the centre and it grows through the roof of ChixChox. It's a white mulberry tree and the sign on it states it is dated from circa 1490 something. ( I think I've got it right but if I am wrong I'm sure some one else can correct me on the date.) Also on the road up from Kissonerga to Tala square there is on the right an old olive tree which looks positively ancient. The pleasure bus from the harbour makes a stop there on its way to the monastery above Tala. It must be at least a couple of hundred years old.

But Louise, I was referring to the restaurant's sign not the tree's sign.
