Abandoned Villages - Trimithousa

Post by Dominic »

While doing some research for the blog on the Abandoned Village of Evretou, I read how the villagers fled to the nearby village of Trimithousa, before eventually settling in the North. From this I deduced that Trimithousa itself might also be abandoned. So I looked it up on Google Maps, and decided to check it out...

We used to go on weekly walks with a club, and walked through this very village on part of a route that we took.

Yes, there are two villages with the same name, just to alleviate any confusion. For sure the one we live in is far from abandoned. 8-)

........ and the un-abandoned Trimithousa owes its name to its surrounding Terebinth trees, which were once a source of local chewing gum. It is said that in 1375 the village was given as a token of gratitude by King Peter XI to Tibaldi Belfrang for his outstanding contributions in the war with the Geneose.

It confused me a bit too when I read about it, until I realised there were two places with the same name. Mind you, there are two Episkopis, so it isn't unique.

Surely the village where Jim and Jacs are neighbours is named Tremithousa (above Paphos and Lemba), rather than Trimithousa (abandoned, up by Evritou)?

Tell the local council that. If you approach the Paphos village you'll find official signs showing both spellings.

By the way, by "Paphos village" I meant the one between Mesogi and Tala, of course.

I see lots of signs with interesting spellings. However, until I can tell them in fluent Greek how they should be spelt I am keeping schtum. :)

Alan this is not the case mate, Tremithousa and Trimithousa are spelt the same and they are same village, as I once said to you it depends on what direction sign you are referring to, the one as you turn left off the Polis road says Trimithousa, now the local put that up, not us ex-pats, our Mukhtar says they are both active village names, use either. (I do) :)

DavidatLWH is correct on this. And Max it sounds as if you certainly do not know this.

Both Google and Wikipedia refer to the inhabited village as Tremithousa, and the uninhabited village as Trimithousa.

If you want to get very confused, visit Hantara Falls. You will see it referred to as Hantara, Handara and Chantara. The waterfalls themselves don't care though. They are lovely whatever name you give them.

As regards Tremithousa / Trimithousa names, I'm using the CTO Tourist Paphos tourist map as my spelling sources...

Cheers- AL ;)

I picked up a CTO guide in my first visit to Cyprus in 1989. In the section on motoring it said that "British visitors will feel at home as here in Cyprus we drive on the right".

Little did I realise that it is true, some of the time.

That reminds me, does anybody know why there are big signs on the Polemi Road off the B7, telling you to drive on the left? I can understand why they have them at the port, but it seems a bit odd having them there too.

Similar signs as you leave Paphos Harbour and drive up the hill to the Old Town, Dominic. And you wonder to yourself "Is Paphos harbour now a Ro-Ro Car Ferry port, like Dover?"

Of course not, LOL! Maybe these signs are meant to remind Continental tourists from Europe that they need to drive on the LEFT in Cyprus, not on the right like back home?

Yes, there are too many signs at Paphos district and I believe it is related to the sign scandal we have recently if one remembers...

Ah! Alan, I use my eyes mate. ;) no need for the CTO.

I will take a couple of street sign photos when passing.
