Animal Rescue Centres

Post by trevnhil »

I didn't know where to post this, because this section seems little used..

We wanted a little dog, and wanted to get one from a rescue centre.. We knew about Paws and looked there. It is a very clean and well run centre, but many of the small dogs were reserved and going to Germany..

We looked at Paphiakos and they have between 400 and 500 dogs of all shapes and sizes. You can imagine that all those dogs make a lot of noise which makes it difficult to think straight...

Looking to find another Rescue Centre I came across a medium sized one at the Paphos side of Limassol, actually very near Kolossi Castle.. The name of the centre it ' Dog Valley Rescue Centre' Their place was good for us, with only 2 or three dogs to a cage.. We spent a while looking around and chose a dog that we thought would be OK for to 70+ oap's :-)

We were still unsure if we had chosen the right one, but we were told that instead of adopting the one we had chosen, we could foster him for a few weeks. This meant that he could be returned if either the dog or us, didn't get on together..

Last Thursday we collected him and brought him home to Polemi.. He is Brilliant.!!! There is no way he will be going back to rescue kennels... He suits us to the ground and is so well behaved it is hard to know why he has been in the kennels for quite a few months.

So... if any of you are looking to rehome a dog... And you have not found one to suit you in the Paphos area.. Try the 'Dog Valley Rescue Centre' at Kolossi...

That's a brilliant story trevnhill, I do like to hear when humans and pets match well together. Thank you so much for sharing and good luck to you and (what's his name?) and hope you all have a lovely life together. :D X

His new name is MAX... The rescue centre called him Tasos.. But he was found on the motorway last September and they could not find an owner. So he is not used to any name really.. He does respond to some commands (requests) in English though.. And he walks on a lead just a foot or so from mine or my wife's legs. No pulling at all ...

Well done Trevor for persevering down the rescue route. I'm still in regular contact with the lady at the eastern end of the island who helped us get our 2 back to UK and she is continuously swamped with new arrivals.
We have a very big hole in our life since both have crossed rainbow bridge but we know our rescues each had a great life together.
I hadn't heard of the rescue you mentioned so thanks for sharing a link.

I too had not heard of the Dog Valley Rescue Centre... And of course they all do a great job, with very little money coming in...
I suppose like other centers they make a charge to cover the cost of the animal being chipped and the vets fees etc..

PS we also have a stray cat that has adopted us :-)

He's gorgeous, Trev. I'm not surprised you both fell in love with Max.
And as for your newly arrived stray cat only being fed its meals outside - that's what Dave was determined would happen with Ginge. "No more cats" was the first declaration. Then Ginge arrived, all skin and bone. So it became "he's not coming inside". That didn't last long. Now, Ginge has 2 beds outside and 3 inside ... Those felines certainly know exactly how to wind us round their little claws.

If 'our' cat wants to come inside then she is welcome to.. She has just had tea and has surprised us by going out of reach of any predators :-) See top centre in the picture
