Alzheimer's Association - Paphos Branch

Post by galexinda »

The aim of the association is to promote public awareness about the care for Alzheimer and other dementia patients in the Paphos Area, to care for patients suffering from this disease and to assist and give support to their carers. It relies entirely on charitable donations and all the funds go to the dementia patients and is spent on the salaries of home visiting nurses and other expenses like transporting patients, drugs and dressings, medical equipment and physiotherapy.

The Day Care Centre is held every Monday morning at the Archangel Michael Hospice, Mesa Chorio, from 10 am to 12.30 pm. Those attending can participate in gentle exercise with music and movement, enjoy social contact with others and light refreshments are available.

The association is represented by Mrs Crystalla Themistocleous (Tel: 99430187 E Mail: chryskontou@gmail.com) who is in charge of the Paphos Branch. She is nurse supervisor at Paphos General Hospital. Full time and part time nurses do home visits under the supervision of Crystalla. Health related advice is given to patients and their carers. Alternative therapy such as reflexology, head massage, pedicure or musical therapy can be arranged on request for a minimal charge. Medical equipment such as wheelchairs, zimmer frames, air mattresses and other medical aids can be supplied on loan. In some cases volunteers can be provided to help care for the patients if their carers need assistance or are in need for some respite.

The self help group encourages dementia patients and their carers to meet with others in similar situations. Participants of the self help group receive a monthly newsletter with practical, medical and social information. All activities of the self help group are on a voluntary basis.
