Pairing Bluetooth 5 with Bluetooth 4

I could do with some help here. I have found some BT headphones (Sony) but they are BT 5, and my LG soundbar is BT 4. LG tell me they cannot confirm that their soundbar will pair with the headphones I want to buy. I have read that BT 5 is backwards compatible with BT 4.2, 4.1 and 4.0 but I don’t want to waste my money. Predictably the Sony Centre are not responding to my emails and when I telephoned they could not understand me. Any help would be appreciated.
