Tell him (use whatever accent you want, I suggest Cornish) that Computer SOS can be contacted via SMS in an emergency. 99251726

Alternatively, has he tried turning it off and on again? :)

I too have been just been messaging with MM.. He has been in touch with SOS and unfortunately they cannot help until the computer can be taken into the shop. As we know this is likely to be at least a few weeks ..

You sort of know when things are dead. Black screen for a start but any informed suggestions may be helpful

Last week my wife's laptop had a black screen and we just couldn't work it out, it seemed like the computer was booting up but it just wasn't working, turned out that she had inadvertently been hitting the function keys and turned the screen brightness down to zero.............Doh!!!!

I assume he has tried all the traditional tricks - turn it off and back on again.

If it's a laptop (?) turn it off, remove the battery, hold your finger on the power button for 30 seconds then reassemble and try again.
Are there any lights on it anywhere?
Try plugging in an external monitor? TV perhaps?

obviously memory man cannot see any of these suggestions at the moment but after a call to him yesterday he would like to thank a forum member who has offered to loan their laptop which is only used for guests & prepared to take it to his home & leave it outside. Nice gesture :D

That is an extremely good offer, and I hope Brian takes it up. But if this was from Norv's phone call to him yesterday it seems like has not taken the offer up, as I have not seen him online.

Poor M M it may be a while before the computer shop opens again .

I'm back online again.
It's been difficult, but I survived.
I have a lot of catching up to do.

Many thanks to Brian and his team at Computer SOS.

Took it all into SOS this morning at 9.30.

received call from SOS 1 hour later ------ all fixed.

It was a faulty cable between PC & monitor.

Only 1 minor hiccup........................ I've lost the @ symbol.

Welcome back Brian.. I am glad that it has been sorted for you and that it would not have been too expensive.
If when you press the @ key you get " Then it can usually be altered by changing the keyboard language on the bottom bar near the time and date

Nice to have you back MM. As Trev said, the @ is there somewhere. You can either find it by experimenting, or change the keyboard layout.

It's often as simple as using the
"
key as the
@
and the
@
key as the
"

Presume windows 10?

Settings - time & language - language and make sure that 'English (United Kingdom)' is selected (you may have to reinstall it perhaps

Then, if you can, remove the English (american) from the system

Job done!

:)

Also depends on the physical keyboard layout.

When we where living in the UK I was asked to look at a monitor that was not working.
When I looked at the monitor I pulled it forward to me and the power lead dropped out!!
His wife had been cleaning and moved it.

If the " key is towards the top left of your keyboard and the @ key is on the right of the centre row of letters then this is the Enlish UK keyboard layout. If vice versa then this is the English (United States) keyboard layout. If you are using Windows 10 to change your input to mirror what keyboard layout you actually have click on ENG (Next to the clock/date info) and this should bring up a choice of keyboard layouts. Just choose whichever is appropriate for your keyboard. You might have to activate the software for your choice via the language preferences section.
