Cyprus used to have extensive forests but historical records show that many trees were cut down by successive populations. In pre history trees were felled to stoke furnaces to produce charcoal which was used to smelt metal, firstly copper, then iron. The Romans apparently used a lot of Cyprus forest timber to build ships,.. There was always a need for firewood and to make agricultural implements or weapons..
The Colonial Govt after the war carried out an extensive tree planting exercise in the Troodos Mtns to help stabilise the soil and to replenish the forests.
