Yes to 2.5 this is what is used in ring mains for your wall sockets.

1.5 NO NO NO this is used for lighting circuts.

It is all to do with the load that the cable can take.

When was the last time you had a 13 amp light bulb!

I agree, if you are not sure of what cable to use then you would be better getting a qualified Electrician to do the job..

Washing machine has a high amp heating element, therefore 2.5mm is the cable size to use....better safe than sorry..

Can you just use an extension cable? Easier and safer,

2,5mm twin & earth is correct for 220 v as in UK and Cyprus but if you were in France on 110 v you could use 1.5 mm.

In EU this work can only be done by a qualified and certified to be competent person though I doubt anyone in Cyprus bothers.

Austin,
Find it strange that you want to ignore the advice given you to use a 2.5mm cable. Hen I recently purchased a house in Chloraka, I asked my experienced and very well qualified electrician to check the wiring in my hew house. He found several places where extra points had previously been fitted. Amongst those were 2 spurs in the kitchen which were incorrectly wired up. In both the lighter 1.5mm cable had been used? One of these was to the washing machine/ tumble drier power point! He was horrified and quickly replaced it with the 2.5 mm one. The other was used to some under cabinet strip lights which had a 30amp fuse. Here he replaced the fuse to the correct and much lower one required..
You do need to have your electrics checked by a qualified electrician, unless you have the necessary knowledge to do it yourself to minimise the risk of a fire or electric shock.

Then

Where are they "ignoring the advice"?
