If an item arrives that they think you have to pay import duty on , they call you in and open the package in front of you .

If the item is not what you ordered do you have to accept it ?

If it doesn't match what's on your invoice/sales confirmation - no!
Neither should you be liable to pay the duty/tax on it either as if it's not the item you ordered, how do they know what the price of the item should be?

Thanks Photolady , I was thinking they might say , wrong goods have been sent , pay the duty and take it away and sort it yourself .

They know the price of the item because goods sent have to have a value on the label .

My experience has always been that when collecting goods from for example outside the Eu that you have to have a sales invoice. The value of the goods on the outside labels does not normally reflect the value of the goods inside. NCV, no commercial value or a notional value such as €5 might be written to try an evade Tax.

When I have brought goods, for my business from the far east, I have been asked by the manufactures what price I would like them to put on the goods, so I can pay less tax this end, they will even put 'samples' on the ticket if you want them to, as to avoid paying any tax, the Cypriots are not Idiots, they know this goes on, that's why they inspect the goods, and will charge what they think the goods are actually worth, as for your question, what if they are the wrong goods, it's your responsibility to send them back to the manufacturer not the responsibility of the Post Office.

Thanks bromerzz , yes I am aware this goes on , I have seen sellers saying they will put a low value on the label to avoid tax .

However my question is what if the goods in the package do not match your invoice ?

Eg a scam trader has sent you low value goods .

Mr Blobby why not drive over to Anavargos Main Post Office and ask them?
They have their rules.. If the package is opened who is responsible for paying for its return postage may depend on who sent it. Cost will depend on where the parcel has to be returned to.
Postage rates to Europe may go up,if there is a no deal Brexit.

Hi all , thanks for the replies . I went to collect my package today and WHL was correct , they opened it and decided nothing to pay and I had to take it away ,even though it was the wrong item.

The story behind my question , I ordered a laptop at a stupidly low price , and the dealer in China sent me a Louis Vuitton purse . ( a few too many sherries lol ) but I thought paying with Visa would protect me .

So I have started a VISA chargeback claim . We shall see .

How did you know it was the wrong item before they opened it?

Because I had seen on the web that other people had been sent a wrong item .

I should have checked before I placed the order , but you live and learn .

Was it Amazon or eBay? Amazon are very good about issuing returns quickly as a result of dodgy sellers.
