Paphos marina study to look at option to include cruise ship facilities

The possibility of building facilities for cruise ships as part of a proposed Paphos marina at Potima was discussed at a meeting on Tuesday between the Transport Minister and the deputy tourism minister with the leadership of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce. Also participating were Paphos MPs and the town’s mayor.

Paphos tourism stakeholders have been pressing for the construction of a pier at Paphos port to allow cruise ships to dock. These are currently obliged to anchor out at sea and visitors are ferried to land by boat.

The Paphos Chamber did not disagree with the deputy tourism minister’s proposal for cruise ship facilities at the planned marina, but said that efforts to upgrade Paphos harbour should not be abandoned.

Transport Minister Vasiliki Anastasiadou told reporters after the meeting that the proposal had been given a positive reception. Studies will be carried out to examine its viability, she added.

Deputy Tourism Minister Savvas Perdios said the two ministries will prepare terms of reference for the consultant who will advise on the construction of a marina and cruise ship facilities.

“There are new developments as regards the cruise sector and these require a comprehensive approach to the issue,” he said.

The construction of a marina is an opportunity to put Cyprus on the world cruise map and the study will show what actions must be taken so that we are successful,” he said.

I already discussed the issue with our Deputy Mayor, Mr. Christos Makarious, while showing him this photo, how terrible it looks in Venice, when huge cruise liner appear there in the Canale Grande. I said:" Imagine a huge ship like that is anchored behind our Paphos castle as initially planned..."

Hopefully this won’t happen! There is a perfectly good cruise terminal at Limassol as posted before. Paphos can manage without one. As we know the smaller cruise ships anchor off shore at Paphos.

Theres is a Terminal at Limassol, no need for one at Paphos, it's only half an hour drive away, plenty of time to bus people into the town for an excursion, the money would be better spent, improving the town's amenities for all tourists.

Oh I love their sense of humour! Talking about building facilities for cruise ships when they still haven't started the marina. When we bought our land in 2001 they were talking about the new martina which was about to be built!

I've merged the "official" Paphos Life news story with this one, as it already has lots of comments. :)

Whilst it may not look nice, it’s not a permanent feature. Venice, as does Paphos, relies on tourism so if a cruise ship with anywhere between 2000 and 5000 passengers wants to dock then surely it’s a good thing for the local economy?

A cruise ship and Marina facility for Paphos would be excellent. It would bring in huge cash flow. IMHO

cruise ships make a big percentage of their cash by selling excursions, so if they dock in Paphos, the ship would be looking to bus people further out Troodos Mountains/ Larnaca/ Nicosia, where they could charge more, not much money in it for them to bus people to see the Tombs of the Kings etc, people getting down from the ship would of just had a mega breakfast, and would head back to the ship for lunch, the best Paphos can hope for is for people to have a drink or buy a few souvenirs.

Other Med ports have piers for cruise ships without it impacting too much on the town. In Mykonos the pier for cruise ships is to the left of the town. Even in very small villages, such as the one that serves Mount Olympus in Greece, Katakola, the cruise pier is just part of the harbour area and serves the locals with ferries but also brings in much needed revenue to the villagers. They also have a bus terminal there to take tourists to Olympia.

Many people do not get off the ship when visiting Limassol or they go on excursions. The town itself does nothing to welcome cruise passengers. No free, or subsidised buses from the cruise terminal to the town and you walk through a gauntlet of very ill mannered taxi drivers to get to the bus stop, where there will be a long line of passengers waiting for a bus into town, and if the bus is full a twenty minute wait till the next one. Also no walkway from the terminal to the town, or even to the Marina development.

A cruise pier at the new marina, and an extension of the walkway to Kissonerga would really benefit Paphos.

WHL. May I suggest that the next time a Cruise ship calls into Paphos, you get down there smartish to watch what happens. Yes, there are one or two coaches to take the passengers to outlying sites that they wish to visit. However, the majority of the passengers are walking into the town and spending money. They stop and have meals as well as they are on shore for quite a few hours.

We do a couple of cruises a year, for the last twenty odd years , so I've got a good idea what goes on, cruise passengers disembark after breakfast, and most get back on board for lunch, unless they have been on an excursion , the majority walk about the town having a coffee etc. No one is suggesting they don't spend money in town, but the cruise companys are only concerned about selling excursions, that is a big chunk of their profits.

A lot of savvy cruise passengers do their own research before travelling. We visited Ephesus in Turkey independently, for half the price of the official excursion. We made sure that we had an official registered guide and were in a registered mini bus. Paphos would be ideal for independent cruise passengers as the historical attractions are almost within walking distance of each other or a short bus ride. Another example, when we visited Tromso in Norway, we realised that all the attractions were within walking distance and the official cruise ship excursion wanted £80 for a tour of the city which we did for next to nothing. The mainly American tourists on the cruise ship last week seemed to be spending a lot. Many were booking the half day boat excursions and the cafes and bars were doing a good trade.

No, it will not be "FILLED with concrete". It will be a beautifully designed and pleasing to the eye huge marina. With attractive villas Hotel shops, restaurants and cafes. A huge draw to the Yachting fraternity and desperately needed.
