Cyprus had the highest proportion of bathing sites with excellent water quality in the European Union with 991.%, according to a report by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency (EEA) published on Thursday.

This is an improvement on last year when Cyprus ranked third with 97.3%.

In four countries, 95% or more of bathing sites were found to have excellent water quality: Cyprus (99.1% of all sites), Malta (98.9% of all sites), Austria (97.3% of all sites), and Greece (97% of all sites).

All reported bathing water sites in Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania and Slovenia were of at least sufficient quality in 2018, it added.

The survey covered 113 bathing sites in Cyprus of which 112 were found to be of excellent quality.

So, have they managed to stop the ships dumping their sewage off the coast of Limassol now? It's only 2 years since there was quite an uproar of contaminated beaches along the length of Limassol tourist areas due to this happening.... articles can still be found published during the summer of 2017.

All very good news! I suspect the exceptionally high quality of the beaches and the seas around Cyprus may have something to do with the exceptionally high rainfall which the island had last winter. In which case something really good happened as a result of the appalling long cold, wet and stormy weather which everyone who was here at the time will remember!
I believe the local Cypriots called it the 100 year winter...
