I think if you’re going to compare people in categories like this, then a distinction between ‘comedian’ as in stand-up and comedy actor/ writer needs to happen.

I.e. Stan Laurel was a genius comedy actor and writer but not a stand-up. Some do cover both, such as Ricky Jervais.

Quite a few of the names on the list are/were part of a double act & IMHO ought not be there. I too had never heard of Stewart Lee. Michael McIntyre is cringe worthy. I just cannot watch him. His delivery is too smug!

So, my choice is the late great, Tommy Cooper, Just like that.

Agree about Michael McIntyre, can't stand him either.

No-one's mentioned Morecambe and Wise? John Cleese in Fawlty Towers?

Rowan Atkinson's genius is that he can make you laugh without saying a word. His movies are brilliant, however many times you see them. His last one, 'Mr Bean's Holiday' just hilarious.

Saw Dave Allen live. Rubbish. Like many, I've never heard of Stewart Lee.

My vote would go to Ken Dodd. The comedian's comedian.

Both Eric Morecambe & John Cleese are in the

shortlist for Britain’s Greatest Comedian which

are mentioned in the original post.

I meant aside of the OP.

Agree josefk about Ken Dodd. Saw the TV documentary on him recently. You would pay to go see a one hour performance and be there for three or more hours...the gags just rolled out one after the other. Many folks missed the last bus home. A brilliant one-off comedian.

Dave Allen, he had me in stitches with his sketches.

I've got to say . . . . . ALL of those 'listed' comedians have made me laugh over the years, and I thank them ALL for it.

Laughter is the best medicine. 😁
