Resturant Rip offs

Just been reading about the Rip off merchants in Mykonos, we were in Mykonos about two years ago, whilst on a cruise, went into a restaurant , as we fancied some fresh fish, the waitress gave us some menus, without prices on them, after asking her a couple of times for menus with prices, and being ignored, we got up and left... be careful guys, their friendly smiles quickly turned into dirty looks and sneers

Just found this, it seems the tax people are investigating the restaurant.

This brings to mind a visit by 5 of us to one of the Harbour restaurants in Paphos in March 2005 just after we had moved there, the smiley friendly chappie in a hat suggested catch of the day, we asked the price was told don't worry my friends very good price for 5 people against our better judgement the relatives with us wanted this, needless to say we were massively overcharged (the exact amount now escapes me after so long) but what I will add that in the further 11+ years we lived in Cyprus never set foot in the place again neither did any of our guests.

Once went to harbour with my son for a couple of beers, paid with a €50 note, got change for a twenty note...
Complained, got the shrug of the shoulders , then I recited the last three digits of the €50 euro note, I have a habit of doing this...
Reluctantly got the correct change, never been back....

The problem is they are not, bothered if you return or not, they know there's
another batch of tourists coming by to be ripped off,
The first thing we always do is find out where the locals eat, we were in Rome recently, so we asked where the locals eat out, we were sent to the old Jewish quarter, great affordable food, where as the majority of Rome's restaurants are serving average food at double the price to tourists.

I'm visiting for the first time in November.
I've read that Sykaminia Cafe is good. Wonder if there are others not discovered by Lonely Planet/ Trip Advisor...yet

The best food/ value places may not all be featured in the travel guides! But local expats often hear of them through word of mouth or find them by chance. As Flossie said they may not be in the very touristy areas.
This local bulletin board is a source of excellent info. Haven’t tried the place you mentioned.

Sometimes we do set ourselves up,How many of us after ordering off the menu do we make a note of how much it cost for what we ordered????....The bill comes we only look at the bottom line and gladly cough up,,and of course being courteous Brits....TIP....Oh dear!

Checking prices before ordering has become a habit here and particularly useful to have an estimate of the total when we are eating with another couple rather than asking for separate bills (which may or may not happen). A tip is given if there is something special about the quality of food and/or service, whereas most people we know automatically give 10 per cent of the total bill.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't 12% automatically added on the menu as service charge ? And then when you are served the bill you are been asked to add extra ?? I ask the waiter / waitress if they get the tip or it goes to management. If to management I decline putting it on the bill and leave the tip directly for the waiter / waitress

Thanks, Flossie.
Me too -- love roaming in the countryside,
finding some great rustic place with a view of the hills

Are you talking about one restaurant, because this isn't the case in Cyprus.

I have found most Cyprus restaurants tend not to rip you off and totally the opposite with free wine and fruit given with most meals. I have said this before Costas in Koloni give great value for money and are always generous with the portions and I always get free cheese and fruit and that big wicked Zivania at the end to finish off. I was ripped of once in the harbour when I went for a walk with the kids and got a pint advertised at 1euro and the kids a soft drink each and got the bill 8 Euro. 1 for the pint and 3.50 for the kids cokes. I went back the next day alone polished off 6 pints paid and left just to get my own back.
