True, Firefly, I guess there are many reasons why some people abandon their pets.
But it doesn’t alter what I said in my post that sadly there are just too many abandoned and feral cats and dogs. There needs to be some rational thought and action to address this with a combination of either neutering or euthanasia used to reduce the number.

Chaddy, it is people who feed these stray animals who add to the problem as the feeding often stops when they leave. At the end of the summer season there are a lot of unfed animals prowling about looking for food.

If only people would stop feeding ferals unless they intend to adopt them permanently.

Dee there is already thought and action to prevent the abandonment of feral animals, and it is what Flossie has already mentioned - the trap, neuter and release programme. This operates island wide, although not all vets participate. Any stray or feral in Paphos certainly will be speyed by many of the local vets and animal protection units free of charge, although a donation is always appreciated. Paphiakos certainly operate this service, but please check your local vet, Paphiakos are always swamped with animals needing speying.

But if everyone simply had their animals speyed or neutered, there would be no problem with feral cats or dogs. Please, please everyone - if you have an animal, or encounter a stray animal please take it to a vet to be spayed/neutered on the government sponsored trap, neuter, release programme. Result, no more strays!! Simples!

But, although the people who promote spaying and neutering tell everyone to go that route, some vets do charge a fee which puts some people off.
Also since stray cats are often difficult to trap and react badly, that is another reason why so many unneutered strays are around. This situation has gone on for years. And many holidaymakers though happy to feed a begging animal neither know or care enough to try to find a vet.
So, realistically euthanasia whether done privately, by a charity or the state may be the best antidote to the explosion in cat numbers.
That’s if a serious attempt to reduce their numbers were to be made,

The whole thing makes some people over emotional... surely the main thing should be the welfare of the feral cat or dog. If there are simply too many of them, selective culling should be considered. If there is neither enough space in Shelters plus a lack of more people coming forward to adopt then it would seem a sensible approach. Thats if one looks at the problem carefully and unemotionally.

Yes, this thread needs to get back on track. Specifically, if you can help, then please do. If you want to start a conversation on the various options for dealing with feral cats, then by all means do so. This thread is not the place for such a conversation though.
