Police chief: an unprecedented form of crime for Cyprus (Update 1)

Post by Paphos Life »

Search teams returned to the Mitsero mine and the lake at Xyliatos on Monday to search for a missing six-year-old girl whose mother was found dead in a water-filled shaft with the body of another woman, as police said it would be premature to speculate on the scale of the crime....

Grim indeed. The women were both Philippinas and there are another 5 or 6 Philippinas missing. Not to mention a number of Sri Lankans and Vietnamese.

I'll leave you to ruminate on why there has not been an outcry before. However, there was a vigil held in Nicosia yesterday (Sunday) attended by a very large number of Philippinas together with a significant number of Cypriots, so it would be inappropriate to generalise and say the locals don't care.

It’s very distressing to think that an innocent child’s life has been taken as well as the 2 ladies bodies found in the shaft......

Lots of people are up in arms about this in Cyprus both foreign nationals and Cypriot alike over the lack of concern over non-Cypriot missing people.
Think about it, when any British or other Europeans have disappeared, it's the families and friends who keep it in the public eye after the first 48hrs have passed by.
But I can't recall seeing anything in the online Cyprus based newspapers or Facebook pages for missing Asian nationalities before this incident.
The body of the first lady who was found in the mine was identified by the friend who reported her and her 6yr old daughter as missing - by the earrings she was still wearing....

That's not completely true. When that German lady went missing last year there was plenty of coverage.

By who though?
Only Pafos Press tend to keep publicity online but none of the mainstream SigmaOnline, In-Cyprus and Cyprus Mail all drop off after the first 2 days.

Cyprus Mail are giving the police a good kicking now:
