"A fire has broken out at the famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, firefighters say.
The cause is not yet clear, but officials say it could be linked to renovation work.
Images on social media show plumes of smoke billowing into the air above the the 850-year-old Gothic building. "

Absolutely dreadful, Such a huge icon to be engulfed in this way, so so sad.

Just awful. It puts me in mind of the Mackintish building in Glasgow. Why is it, when these buildings are being renovated . . . . . .they sometimes suffer the worst???

It reminded me Maggie of when I lived on the farm & my father decided to use some dynamite to blow up a tree stump in the orchard with some success. Unfortunately the outside cludgie vanished a well. Accidents happen but why? That's the question

Yes! Terrible, but thank God that a crowded mass was not being celebrated at the outbreak. One fireman has unfortunately been injured but it could have been a lot worse on a human scale.

Brings around the debate on radio - that, just like when monuments like these were built when the poor starved, as an edifice towards a Church's faith in God, and to hold the poor in awe..... that the poor of Paris will once again suffer, while we rebuild a monument that is now not much more than a museum.

It leaves me wanting the beautiful building restored, but not to ignore the poor...

Och, I reckon we ALL feel the same as you Jim. No arguments there.

I'm not rich monetarywise, neither am I religious but, the the wee church in my old village
of Kyle of Lochalsh is one of the most important to my heart.

And yep, when I was a whippersnapper, the Church had pennies in the Coffers. 🤔
