Does your dialect give your location away

Post by memory man »

For each question, choose whichever answer comes closest to how you talk casually with friends.

It's pretty accurate for me.

Quite accurate. I was raised in Ormskirk and lived all of my working life in Rochdale and it said I was from the Blackpool, Manchester region.

It came up with 3 places for me, one of which was pretty close but the other 2 were miles off!

Doesn't work for me. It split me between Home Counties, Midlands, North-East and a little bit in Scotland, where I did grow up! However, I've not lived in the UK since 1963!

In my head I don't have a dialect when I speak.. But when I hear my voice recorded it is definitely a Lancashire accent..

Got me spot on, East Yorkshire, Hull actually. Clever stuff, and interesting. Have to say I can usually pick on a Hull accent when I hear it around, it's a pretty flat accent so not too hard to pick out. But like any other area it has its idiosyncrasies!

I left Devon 43 years ago, yet it identified my accent as from there.

Tut Tut Hudswell! You are right tho, it's a very distinguishable accent, I always think it's very flat, but guess it has its own connotations!

My granddaughter, who lives with me at the mo, is always asking me about accents on the tv. Don't know all the answers, but it does interest me.

Where are you from and how did you meet a Beverley lass?

Does dialect really matter? Be proud of where you come from.
I put Surrey and Cheshire which really foxed it!

I must have a slight Cypriot dialect now ;o) because it put me northeast of my home town, but close.

The title of this thread makes no sense whatsoever. I am from Tipperary but I should imagine that if I stood underneath the Angel of the North and shouted Why-Aye for a bit then it would. I don't think I will.
