Re: persciption charges

Post by JimX »

Not yet but I posted this back last year David, GESY will soon be upon us all, I cannot see how getting prescriptions will affect us, will it depend on your age? that cost may be something that will affect us all I do not know? no doubt you will still need to see a GP at the General and then take the prescriptions to your usual Pharmacy, but as we do not really know the outcome as yet it is wait and see.

I remind those who feel we will lose health cover here, Cyprus had a reciprocal health cover with the UK when Cy was not in the EU and of course the UK was.

When the UK leaves the EU I feel nothing will change regarding local health cover, but you cannot get any real answers as nobody knows as yet, if they say they do then ask how they know.

Here is part of the GESY thread that may or may not be the future, on this who actually knows.

The P3 A had a talk on GESY last month when Dr Nicos (ex Paphos General Hospital doctor) was the speaker. He tried to explain how the service will work. I thought that he said that once you have signed up to join the new National Health Service which we were told would be in March, consultations with GP’s who have joined the GESY would be free. Prescriptions then can be taken to your local pharmacy. Then it won’t be possible for a patient to self refer himself to a specialist, he needs to go via his GP first to be referred by him.. There are also other rules, but some points have yet to be agreed by GESY and the doctors, i guess we will all be told in due course.

I did my online registration the other day. The beneficiaries portal is not yet available to do the full registration (although I managed to get into it via a wrong turn to complete mine). I couldn't do the final stage which was to select a doctor from the list so I called The GESY helpline where a most informative lady explained that the lists are still being finalised so are not available online for you to select your chosen GP yet. She told me to keep an eye on the website for news. Whilst on the phone she told me (although I wouldn't rule out further changes):

GP visit will be €1
Specialist (by referral) will be €6
Specialist (self referral) will be £25 - so you don't have to be referred by your GP if you are happy to pay the €25 but it would need to be a GESY registered specialist.
Gynocology - you can self refer and it will cost €6

This is what the Health Minister said in September about prescription costs:

"Once the introduction of Gesy is complete all medicines used by in or outpatients will be covered by the scheme, at a cost of €1 per drug to the patient.

The medicines prescribed will be generic where they are available which will be cheaper for the state to procure, he said. However if someone wishes to use a more expensive medicine they will just have to pay the difference."

Thanks, both, it at least clears a few questions, it looks as if the cost of prescription drugs will rise, I feel using your usual pharmacy will be no hardship, fewer ques etc, I will look for your post with the GESY form for application and fill it in, did you get confirmation of them receiving it?

Thank you again both.

This is where you will register online. You can do the first part but you have to wait for the 'Beneficiaries Portal' to show in order to complete it. It will be there soon. Then you can go to the doctor lists and select your doctor. I understood from the lady on the help desk that you can do all of this through your doctor. However, she said it is better to do the registration yourself (with PIN numbers etc going via your personal phone and email). You will then 'own' the account and log in details and therefore can get access in the future to your basic medical records and other info etc. Website is:

Hi,Thanks for the info.If you do not sign up to Gesy, will you still be able to use the present system at the General? We have the white card.I also find it strange that the pharmacy at the General has been extended to incorporate two extra windows(six pharmacists there on Monday). Why would this happen if the majority of prescriptions with Gesy are going to the local pharmacies?
Everybody I discussed Gesy with on Monday at the General had not even heard of it.

Tonee, that is a very good question.. Why would they need to expand the pharmacy if it is no longer going to be used by the outpatients.. ??

Probably because GESY has NOT been agreed as yet, so plans for that extension just went ahead. If GESY is passed and I believe it will then that Pharmacy at the General will not be used by the public.
