Some supermarkets risk banking their own takings and rely on a member of staff (usually a lone nervous female) to deposit it too!!

And you know this, How?

Was at a Bank In Larnaca just before Christmas, when the security van arrived, with a Police car escort, both coppers got out, both holding machine guns. better safe than sorry.

Also noticed a G4S security van had a police escort when I was driving along TOTK, something I haven't seen before in Paphos. Certainly made the traffic keep to the speed limit.

Perhaps the larger towns here are different WHL and do have it all the time?!! Also I don't think they need specific intelligence it's plain common sense as we all know it's happened before many times!!

:)
Many Times? i've been living here thirty years, and cant remember one instance, where a Security van has been hit.

Slightly different - I was surprised to see an armed policeman outside The Mall when I went before Christmas. I would have expected a security guard employed by the The Mall, but I'm sure this was the police.

I have often seen two armed police officers walking around inside the Mall.

From a few years ago in Paphos,
this was in the Cyprus Mail.

I'm sure it was Papantoniou supermarket @ kato.
A SUPERMARKET employee was robbed yesterday at noon in Paphos. The 50-year-old woman was driving to the bank to deposit the weekend takings when another vehicle cut in front of her at the junction of Agamemnonos and Protagoras.
Three robbers were involved in the crime. Two got out of the car holding the woman at gunpoint before grabbing her bag which contained around €130,000 in total.
A gunshot was fired in the air by the perpetrators to scare a member of the public who tried to stop them. The robbers who were not wearing anything to hide their identity fled on a red Suzuki, police said.
The incident happened at the junction of Agamemnonos and Protagoras.

MemoryMan, I'm not sure if it is the same incident, but when Orphanides was in the now empty Paphos Mall, their takings were stolen from the employee tasked with going to the bank, and if I remember correctly, the theft took place in the underground section of the Car park.

The incident MM was referring happened with the Fruitmarket Eden in the so called "Russian Road" area. I was just not believing in the amount of money claimed as weekend takings...from them..

Surely it would be easy to check whether they were telling porkies.

Imagine somebody deposits 10K a week in takings. The day they get robbed, they say the week's takings were 100K.

Would anybody believe them?
