My first train memory at 5 years old, was going on a steam train from Motherwell to Glasgow - where a vast number of them were built. One of the original steam engine sheds still exists in Springburn and some of the cranes used to lift them onto ships are still on quaysides in Glasgow.

Most were shipped to India and other overseas territories, where many still run

Interestingly, my cousin, who died a week ago, was a fireman on locomotives, before joining Rolls Royce. He had a keen interest in steam all his life.

Memories of when I was a nipper - Steam engines and grass fires go together.
