Alex's Farm of Strays Animal Rescue

Post by Goldano »

I’d like to introduce you to Alex’s Farm of Strays. A shelter for stray and abandoned animals based in Tremithousa, Pafos. Alex Kyriakidou started her farm 10 years ago aged 15 with just 3 dogs. Today Alex’s Farm is one of the largest shelters in the Pafos District with over 200 dogs, yet is still relatively unknown.
Living in Cyprus, we all know the relentless problem with stray and abandoned dogs. Too many Cypriot dog owners do not agree with spaying or neutering, unwanted puppies are dumped and once a hunting dog is no longer useful, if it isn’t shot or poisoned, it is turned away to fend for itself. For every 2 dogs Alex manages to re-home, another 5 appear!
Of course, Alex didn’t plan to have such a large shelter or even to have one at all - she planned to go to university and train to be a vet! The shelter has become a full time job and has taken over Alex’s life completely to the point where she is exhausted and desperately needs help. It isn’t just looking after the dogs in the shelter, it is taking dogs to the vets, advertising dogs for adoption, completing the paperwork for dogs being re-homed abroad, taking the dogs to the airport, most often Larnaca airport – and so on.....
Thus far, the financial resources for the shelter have been mainly provided by Alex’s family and by the generosity of a handful of loyal supporters. But it is not enough to cover the growing cost of food, vaccinations, parasite treatment and vet fees needed to keep the dogs in good health. Alex has recognised the need for alternative funding and is in the process of setting up a registered charity which will give access to a small amount of Government funding and is soon opening a shop in Kissonerga where donated items can be sold.
There are a number of ways in which you can help
1. Volunteer your services at the shelter
2. Drive dogs to the airport when 2 vehicles are required
3. Donate items to the charity shop
4. Sponsor an unadoptable dog who will live in the shelter for life
5. Make a cash donation

Full details of the above and more can be found on our Facebook pages...

Poor Alex is a young girl. She now has a few helpers but could do with more. She is also full to bursting, and recently had an out break of some contagious disease, but I think it is cleared now. There is a fund raising event at Tsada this Saturday with the singer Gaynor supporting it. No idea what time, it wasn't mentioned but there is food. One of the Taverners is hosting it. Maybe someone knows at bit more about it?
