Seems crazy to start the hunting season in August. why? Or are they hoping to pick off a few tourists who will be all over the place...

Shooting for Red Grouse resumed on the (glorious) 12th August in Scotland, so there must be some sort of seasonal hunting link here, I would have thought?

It isn't a full resumption of the hunting season. It's just one of the occasional days they allow it.

Duck season starts tomorrow in Finland. It is indeed true that each country has periods when certain animals can be hunted

Looking at the list, it seems that they can almost make their own dates up..
eg.. 4 to six times August to October, but daily in some areas !!!

I posted this comment in the article about poachers being fined, but here is probably a better place.

As I wander around the countryside geocaching I see shotgun cartridges everywhere, even next to No Hunting signs. I suspect some of these heroic hunters probably think that the signs have been put there as somewhere to lean their guns, as they regale each other with stories about how they manfully took on a full grown bird and won the battle.
