No surprises then, Erdogan has already said he will not remove Turkish troops, so it's dead in the water :(

Not sure how that demand for Turkish citizens in the North to be given EU citizenship could ever be met. Cyprus is quite keen to sell EU passports for a couple of million a pop to the Chinese, but giving them away for nothing is surely a no no for both Cyprus and the EU

So should flogging them to the Chinks for a million be a "no no".

Chinks? How dare you use such an offensive and pejorative term?

Of course selling them to the upward slanting eyed Orientals should be a no no- the EU is probably about to shut that particular goose that lays golden eggs down, but it has raised about Euro 1 billion for the nefarious Cyprus political class, who have treated them abysmally in their dealings to date and who I am sure call them a lot worse than the term geoffreys used. Even Antonis Loizou felt obliged to comment on it recently

Stop being so "PC" Trev! No worse than Yanks, Ozzies, Frenchies, etc.
Worry more about the context - do you want 1000s of "oriental gentleman" on EU passports?
I don't, luckily the UK is leaving the EU.
Do you want Cyprus to have a reunification?
Have a nicer day above the snow line.

I've never understood this new PC 'being offended on behalf of others' nonsense...

I wasn't offended by Geoff's remarks, I doubt if any Chinese were... I'm not offended at the label 'Brit' either...

Why the outrage?

Because its connotations are similar to those of the 'N' word - it is offensive.

Oh No it is also very offensive to me, but I'm almost getting used to offensive and disgusting remarks by some people on forums etc. I do not think it has anything to do with being PC to be offended, but more with expecting simply some manners.

I also agree with Louise, Devil and Trev- the comment is both unnecessary and offensive - common courtesy and good manners should always prevail when referring to or addressing anyone whatever their nationality.

The difference between "Chink" and "Yank" is that Americans don't find the latter offensive whereas Chinese people do find the former offensive. Like the "N" word, it's use says more about the person using it than anything else.

I have no problems with the terms "Chinks", "Brits", etc, or being called a "White Honky" for that matter but I suspect that geoffreys was well aware of the effect he solicited by tossing the "Chinks" grenade into the post! "Chinese" would easily have sufficed but only he will know the real reason for not using it!

I think it's down to whether the subject of the term finds it offensive or not. (Some) Chinese people do, according to Wikipedia at least.

I bet you Chris Rock uses the N word 100 times in his stand up ...so why the problem ??

Personally I found Conoflex's term "upward slanting eyed Orientals" far more provocative and juvenile. I have a feeling it was meant to be though.

TV in the 70s was of it's age. If you watch some of it now it is cringeworthy. Aren't you glad that humour has now progressed beyond poking fun at the way people look or the colour of their skin?
