What to do in a medical emergency?

Post by Richard Dastard-Lee »

We have owned our apartment for 12 years and have probably used it over 50 times and fortunately in that period we have never required any medical assistance other than that which can be catered for by buying over the counter medicine at a pharmacy. As we both turn 60 soon it struck me that perhaps we ought to have a better idea of what course of action we should take should we have any medical issues.

Our stays are never for longer than 3 weeks so we have regular travel insurance and our EHIC cards. Our apartment is at the bottom end of Universal and we do not own or hire a car. So my questions are;

Who should we call in the event of a medical emergency?
Who should we call or where should we go for non emergency (GP type) treatment?

Your EHIC covers you for any emergencies as long as your stay is less than 90 days. This would entitle you to go to the General Hospital at Paphos and pay €6.

If you need a GP, you can go to one of the private hospitals here for a consultation which will cost €30. If you need a consultant in the private hospital, a consultation is €50.

There is a list of medical centres in the Paphos LIfe Directory.

Also Dentisty:

Opticians:

And vets:

The Europe-wide emergency number is 112.

But if it is a serious emergency ie A&E, you need to call a state ambulance and tell them where you are.
The cost of a visit to the General A&E 24/7 department is 10 euros, and don't forget to take your EHIC card with you..

As Dominic says the emergency no is 112 but someone once told me that they remembered it by 1 mouth,1nose, two eyes and when they were panicking in an emergency that is how they remembered it!

Better than trying to remember it. Put it in your phone under Ambulance or something you will remember

Probably the nearest hospital to Universal is the Iasis, a private hospital, which is only about 5mins by taxi. It should always have a duty doctor and has an emergency room.

112 works in nearly every country in the world; it is an international emergency number. In the UK, it works the same as 999 and here in Cyprus, the same as 199. Even the Vatican City has it, but they say that a prayer can also be effective :)

Does that mean 112 will not work in the UK?

According to Google:
"In the UK, 999 and 112 do the same thing, namely connect you to the emergency services. Neither number has priority over the other, and neither number provides location information better than the other."
