New Posts vs Unread Posts
New Posts vs Unread Posts
Somebody sent me a message because they thought the "New Posts" link wasn't working properly. Now, I never use "New Posts" myself. I prefer "Unread posts" because it is unambiguous. If you use the Unread Posts link, you get a list of posts you have not yet read.
So I looked in to the New Posts option, and it surprised me. New Posts gives you a list of posts that have been made since you last logged in. So if you have a page of new posts, and you log out, when you log back in you will have no new posts, until somebody else posts. Presumably (I have yet to test) if you are logged in, and then log in using a different device, then this will also reset the New Posts list
I have decided then, to ask you good people to tell me which option you use; New Posts or Unread Posts. I think most people looking at New Posts actually want to see Unread Posts.
However, I may be wrong. So please tell me which of the above options you use.

I always browse down them all. You can tell by datestamps and who posted last, and it's fun for me!

New posts for me too....don't want to read every post, especially most of the political ones.
Re: New Posts vs Unread Posts
New posts every time, as panoscouse says, I don't want to read every post either.

New Posts.
If I don't read it then I am not interested and don't want to see it next time, unless there is new stuff.

With the Unread Posts view, there is a link at the bottom which reads "Mark all as read". If you click that, it clears the page.panoscouse wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2017 6:39 am New posts for me too....don't want to read every post, especially most of the political ones.
But with the New Posts view, you only see new posts since the start of your current login session. So if you haven't logged in for a couple of days, and you then log in, you won't see a list of posts from the last couple of days.
Don't worry, I don't intend changing anything. I just wanted people to be aware of what the New Posts option actually did. Personally I think the unread posts option is better, as it will only get cleared when you click the link at the bottom of the page.
With regards to politics, if you go into your user preferences and click the usergroups tab, you can join a group called "Please Hide Politics". You won't see them after that.

Re: New Posts vs Unread Posts
If one wants to follow up with a certain topic you have to use NEW POSTS or the GENERAL otherwise you loose out with answers from members...
specially when NEW POSTS is reset and there are only one or two left. (have my computer on 18 hours/day and reload from time to time as I use Firefox and Opera in parallel.)

Re: New Posts vs Unread Posts
The "Unread Posts" view will show you anything that is in the New Posts view. Because any new post will be unread. The difference is the unread posts view is not dependent on the last time you logged in. It is just dependent on whether you have looked at the post or not.cyprusmax47 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2017 10:16 am If one wants to follow up with a certain topic you have to use NEW POSTS or the GENERAL otherwise you loose out with answers from members...

Re: New Posts vs Unread Posts
I have been using New Posts but now that Dominic has pointed out the option to "Mark all as read" I will switch to using the Unread Posts
