According to the Daily Mail, 900,000 Britons are too fat to work....

Post by Jimgward »

.... Hmmmm..... well since unemployment is around 1.5m, I reckon that means around 60% of all unemployed, are, because they're too fat to work.....

I know the Daily Mail is prone to a wee exaggeration or 5,000..... but....

Well is the Metro any better http://metro.co.uk/2017/05/30/almost-90 ... s-6673224/

Or RT.com https://www.rt.com/uk/390197-fat-obesit ... -benefits/

But of course if you don't want to believe it then you just won't, no matter where the information comes from

At least I'm not in that category....

I may not be employed but that's my personal choice even though I'm not officially retired, I'm definitely not too fat! Still a UK size 10 jeans wearer (or an 8 if you shop in Marks & Sparks) at 5' 7" tall and coming up to 59yrs of age.

My recent health check with my local GP after returning to the UK was I'm absolutely fine! Next stop is the mammogram next month. Can't say as I'm looking forward to that!

The Metro and The Daily Mail are the same company.

As for RT.COM...

Mind you, 160,000 is still too high.

Take it from me......At MINIMUM the DM is correct. It would not surprise me if 25% of the population is overweight. Quite staggering when you walk down the local high street there are just SO many....I find it staggering that the bigger ladies are the tighter the clothes they wear. ....nuff said.

So what if 25% are overweight? That doesn't mean that they are unable to work, which was the point of the article.

Hudswell wrote: Fri Jun 02, 2017 5:13 pm There is a serious side to this of course....when obesity is seen as a disability! And therefore those that are morbidly obese claim benefits....it is actually a good article if you actually take the time to read it. Those registered as obese number about 160k, but then you factor in those with diabetes, heart problems, arthritis, and other weight related illnesses the numbers start to add up! So not really a silly article at all. When people actually start to take responsibility for preventable illness perhaps the astronomic welfare bill will begin to drop, benefiting not only themselves but society as a whole.
I agree with you, to an extent.... however, most illnesses are down to lifestyle..... or genetics..... or just damned bad luck ...

Yes, obesity through overeating is the cause of many illnesses, but many obese people also suffer from mental illnesses and depression...

Tarring all with the same brush is dangerous.

If you look at men in the 60's, barely anyone was overweight and indeed very slim. The average now must be stones heavier....

With cars, people rarely exercise and that is a large part....

It's why the NHS needs to spend money (it doesn't have) on prevention.... education.... monitoring lifestyle and wellbeing and interceding at the proper time...
